If Le Samourai isn't announced tomorrow then I plan to write a very strongly-worded email to Mr. Jon Mulvaney.

...and I can assure you he won't like it.

I just finished watching the new Disney Blu-ray of Tomorrowland. This is a pretty awesome flick on its own terms, but I get the feeling that its true purpose is to make an epic double feature with the Criterion Blu-ray of Things to Come. I certainly thought about Things to Come quite a bit as I was watching.

If, like me, you feel sadness whenever you hear about budget cuts to the space program, then these movies might just be right up your alley.

It's surprising how few films, excluding documentaries, have actually been made about the space program.

I can only think of a couple that were based on something historical.

...Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff.

Just finished Thief. Really good movie. I loved the visuals. The grain was also awesome, made me feel like I was actually watching a film in the theatre . Whenever the music kicked in you'd really feel it. Pretty neat movie and I'm glad I own it.

I haven't any special personal wishes for tomorrow (beyond an upgrade of Night Train to Munich, The Lady Eve, Heaven Can Wait, Green for Danger, Brute Force and/or Pickup on South Street) ... but I do think it would be nice of Criterion to announce the rest of the titles hinted at in the 2015 Wacky New Year's cartoon.

From what I can tell, they still owe us The New World, Speedy, Clouds of Sils Maria, Inside Llewyn Davis, the Before Trilogy, and whatever the clock was referring to ... anything else?

I've seen thin Red line. Was my first malick movie, actually. I mentioned this before but the audio in thin red line would reverberate my room a lot. Any of the scenes where there were background noises and explosions and far off in the distance things made my room shake and it was very distracting. Totally not the fault of the movie, but still. And it was a reverberation issue that is honestly unique to thin red line for me. I've watched loads of noisy action movies, transformers, the matrix, but it's the strange background noises in thin red line that mess with me.

Anyeayyyyyys, Ivr also seen tree of life which is great too. A bit dramatic but still very moving. Sean penn was... Very robotic.

Gonna watch badlands soon, and days of heaven is next on my shopping list for sure.

I hope I don't get bashed for suggesting this, but in case you want to see the theatrical cut of Thief with the original (or not) colors, it has been released by Arrow.
Here's the differences in colors:

My personal opinion is that it looks more like an 80s movie with those colors.

Interesting about the reverberations, my guess is it was probably because of a specific low frequency, I recommend you get some sample sounds with all the low frequencies and playback all at your regular listening level to try to eliminate vibrations from things around your house.

Also something like a sub-woofer riser could help too.

Before Trilogy please. Also, Boyhood. And maybe some John Sayles if they can make it happen. But I'm dreaming (of Matewan on Blu-ray).

I grew up with the space race and spent many anxious hours watching the various launches and landings back then. Our manned program has gone to hell with no clear goals and we need to thumb rides to the ISS aboard Russian spacecraft. That's beyond sad.

Not trying to argue here since I personally don't know how films looked in the 80's.

But I was wondering how common was analog color grading in those times? seems to me color grading whole films only became popular with the advent of digital color grading technology, post 2000.

Arrow release seems to look quite bluish, but I am not sure if they used some kind of filters or if it was a common practice to have that look then.

Things to Come is on my list for the next B&N sale. I have only seen it once - years ago on British television - but can quite vividly recall some of the striking imagery courtesy of its stupendous production design. What I can't remember, however, is to what degree it reflects Wells' political opinions; as the film's scriptwriter, it would seem logical that it mirrors closely his overt and idealistic views on socialism and the World State. Also not seen Tomorrowland but it is on my list - although I must be honest and say that is mostly down to the presence of Hugh Laurie, who is one of my favourite actors. Very interested to see both of these now, and draw any comparisons. Especially the political context of each film. And yes, we should be spending more money, not less, on space exploration.

Bluish?
Are you talking about the Arrow director's cut which has the same colors with Criterion?
I was talking about the theatrical cut.
The theatrical cut is the brownish in those 2 comparisons I posted.
That one reminds me of an 80s film.

Oh ok, I just assumed it was a comparison between Criterion and Arrow discs.

Then I agree that the neutral colors seems more plausible for an 80's film, but I guess the director changed his mind having the chance to readjust the colors for the new release.

I have the studio canal blu Ray of Mulholland Drive and was wondering if anyone has seen the Criterion and if it's worth the double dip. Thanks

No bashing required... I am glad I bought the Arrow special edition version, because I hate the way some directors and/or studios are going back and revising color timing in some movies. Sure, I wouldn't mid a few adjustments here and there, and corrections where colors have faded. But really, to me, the new coloring present in 'Thief' looks totally wrong. White isn't white at all. It's a blue/teal soup...

Debates about this issue have been ongoing over at Home Theatre Forum for a number of older films, particularly Desk Set - that's another film that looks way too blue on bluray.

Well, October 15th is here. Wonder what will be announced?

My guesses; The Graduate and The King and The Mockingbird (along with The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird).

Im assuming Inside Llewn Davis for sure as they just posted the picture of it on Social Media. They posted the one for the Killers right before they announced that too.
REALLY hoping for that clock to be After Hours too, that would be one of the best announcements of the year!

REALLY hoping that clock is The Big Clock. Now that would be one of the greatest announcements of the new year.
