One that hasn't been mentioned here is Boyz 'n The Hood. It's a really powerful and realistic portrayal of street life.

I still haven't forgotten the experience I had when watching 12 Years A Slave in theaters. it had such a huge impact movie I have never forgotten it

I think what made Braveheart so powerful for me was the story of men fighting for what they believed in against overwhelming odds and then how it ended on a sad note with Mel Gibson's character dying by execution.

I can recommend some really powerful foreign films - not artsy fartsy, totally entertaining yet leaving a huge emotional impact that will carry on in your mind for years:
