Fantastic choice. Rena Owen is phenomenal in it.

My favorite is The Great Dictator. Chaplin made the film in 1939 prior to our entry into WWII and the world knowing everything that was occurring.

Chaplin's speech at the end of the film is one of my favorite scenes and the most powerful in film.

The last movie that I found really "powerful" was 12 Years A Slave. Was a brutal experience, as it should've been.

- Guy has a four-way with some hookers before killing his family

Bicycle Thieves
- Some guys bike gets stolen, has to get it back because otherwise his family will starve to death

The Road
- World's gone ... Boy and his Father have to move south through gangs, cannibals and worse.

Threads
- World gets Atomic Bombed ... and it is not a nice site. Death, decay and deformed babies.

Come and See
- WW2 partisan flick with real bombs and real bullets ... really really depressing.

The Rapture
- Immensely depressing flick (the less you know about it, the more impact it will have, trust me)

Women in the Dunes
- You will, in part, question your existence

I didn't like it but Synecdoche New York is powerfully existentialist and fatalistic. It will make you question everything you value and hold dear in the world, and the very meaning of your existence at all.

Do you mean brutal experience for the movie watcher or for a particular character?
