Princess Mononoke

Seeing the differences between the DVD and Blu-ray just floored me the first time I popped in the disc.

Unfortunately I don't own a wide variety of blu-rays aside from some of my favourite films, but of the ones I do own I must say the transfer on the recent Goodfellas Remastered blu-ray is wonderful. I rented the original blu-ray a few years ago and even that looked pretty decent to me, but this new 4K transfer is stunning.

Lean's In Which We Serve (also in the Criterion box set) looks like it was shot last week, albeit in black & white...

That's not a bad shout about Dr No. It's one of the most natural looking Lowry Bond remasters by far and it really is like looking through a window into that world, that's actually the feeling I got from it the last time I watched it.

I think Aliens might be my favourite. For a movie which people had long written off as not being able to look good (because of all those crappy SD versions which couldn't handle the grain or because of the "poor film stock" blah blah blah) the Lowry remaster is nothing short of incredible. You can still see some signs of the processing but overall the effect is remarkable.

Apocalypse Now

The Thin Red Line

The Dark Knight (do not understand why this transfer has been criticized).

Harakiri (incredible black and white transfer).

I used to think that the first time I saw it on my 32" screen years ago, but watching it on my 55" display and with a better understanding of what film should look like, its one of the worst looking transfers I've seen for a modern film. EE everywhere and flat looking colour and contrast.

My favorite transfer is The Godfather.

The recent release of Spartacus jumped into the elite tier for me.

Sound of Music is another one.

Snake Eyes (1998) and Thief (1981). Two of my favorite films that looked like absolute crap on DVD, and look amazing on blu-ray!
