A beta tester in the UK leaked info on the remote including picture 2/2015. A couple of months ago Amazon released info it was going to ship a couple of days before the Sony Paris show October 27th and the timing caused me to speculate that Media features, maybe 4K blu-ray was being firmware updated at that show. Who knows?

I've heard $23 average for disks, 1080P blu-rays are in bins at Walmart for $9.80. Panasonic has a UHD blu-ray player selling in Japan for $1,300 but it has a 3 TB hard disk and both Satellite and Cable TV tuner support. Again trying for Total Entertainment Hub status.

PS4 is going to be $349 but you have to add Network ($119 with 2 tuners) or USB tuner ($69) for the same features (2016 with DSS). By late 2017 most Cable systems should be all IPTV from a cable modem and no tuner required.

There's nothing official yet. Heck, there's not really even anything rumored along those lines either: just guesswork and speculation. Maybe it'll happen. Maybe it won't. Until something more substantive comes out, the safest answer is "no, it won't" (although I hope it will!).

if you are referring to the DMR UBZ1, you are off by around $2,000.

Panasonic plans to offer just 500 of the new players per month at the onset, for a price of Ą400,000 (or around $3,334)

Kaleidescape has a similarly priced product for the U.S, UK and Canada, but primarily for downloads and playback at UHD BR rates. It won a CEDIA technology award.

Is anyone reading cites?

1) HDMI 2.0 timings were known but the HDCP scheme was not. Since HDCP takes place in Southbridge it can be firmware updated. The PS4 custom HDMI chip supports the faster clock and programmable dividers for HDMI 2 and just passes through HDCP negotiations to Southbridge. All other features remain the same.

2) UHD requires TEE support for both UHD IPTV and blu-ray. I.E. HDCP must take place in the TEE not in the HDMI chip. For the PS4 that's the Southbridge ARM SoC and for the XB1, AMD APUs and dGPUs that's the ARM SoC inside the APU or dGPU.

Proofs of this are in this link.

As for a modern blu-ray drive able to read a UHD blu-ray disk, that's the easiest to prove provided you understand the technology. If you want a very strong rumor: A company that makes the equipment to manufacture commercial 3 layer UHD disks stated in 2013 that the XB1 and PS4 would have UHD support.

the market launch of the new ultra-high definition television technology and the upcoming market introduction of the new gaming consoles Playstation PS 4 by Sony and Microsoft’s Xbox One. Both gaming consoles are even expected to be equipped with a Blu-ray drive with 4K support to win the consumers’ favor.
A moderator on this forum 2/2015 stated he had heard UHD uses a modern standard blu-ray drive.

I've been informed that PC's will not require new Blu-ray drives to playback 4k media/bluray. PC's will only need software that supports 4K. So we have it then.....

HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 check (thanks Nvidia),
BD drive - check,
4k software support - check (Windows 10).
Any OEM computer that complies with all the Windows 10 requirements will play UHD disks. For the first time Microsoft will support HD and UHD blu-ray in windows without third party support for codecs or players. Why now why this feature? When you answer that you have part of the marketing plan for Microsoft and the CE industry. Playready ND allows streaming HD and UHD blu-ray media over the home network. It also supports DVR and Live media streaming from Tuners for Antenna TV and Cable with the DSS replacement for cable cards in 2016.

Thanks for correcting me... I mis-remembered the price because $3,000 is so outrageous. 500/month = 16 a day explains part of the high price.

500/month assumes initial slow adoption rates which supports a recognition of chicken and egg issues in UHD taking off. PCs, XB1 and PS4 launching UHD at the same time with Digital bridge supporting 1080P over the home network will be a selling feature provided there are client STBs and TVs to support this. PS3 will be a 1080P client as will most Vidipath platforms. I found a Android STB selling direct from China that advertized UHD blu-ray support but didn't have a drive. They essentially leaked that they were going to support blu-ray streaming in advance of Official Confirmation.

I know where the logic is coming from, but UHD-BD is a new format as much as BD and HD-DVD were.
NO because HD-DVD was completely different.

Let me put it this way

The Sammy I bought in 2006 could not play back Bonus view features or BD live features. If I wanted to use those features I needed to buy a new player.

The PS3 I bought in 2006 could do neither. But a few months later it could play back Bonus view and BD live and a few years later it could play back 3D BD.

On the other hand someone that bought a xbox 360 and wanted HD-DVD playback needed to run out and buy the HD-DVD drive. Why was that, was it because the 360 could not handle it (the same way my Samy could not handle 3D or BD live or Bonus view) no. It was because the format was difference and it is impossible to make a DVD drive play an HD-DVD.

In theory (though I seriously doubt it) the PS3, PS4 and xbone could have a FW update that plays back UHD BDs in some way (i.e. the HDCP 2.2 requirement means that it would most likely not send a 4k video to the TV but that is immaterial). my laptop and desktop that have BD drives could play back UHD BDs if the SF for it is available, the same way I did with 3D.

It is insane to define "a new format" just based on

1) name resemblance (like HD-DVD and DVD)
or
2) some devices might not support all the features in the newer version

The press release in the above link is exactly the same press release posted here last week (post 4075).

UHD BD has everything but a logo, a plan, discs or players. Fortunately, they are able to rustle up an announcement once in awhile.

What are your thoughts on the current state of 3D filmmaking?

The truth is that technology is moving so quickly that the high-end 2D [high-dynamic range] nearly makes 3D redundant. We shot and edited The Martian on 3D and it was pretty straightforward if you've got the right team, and [cinematographer] Dariusz Wolski is great. From my point of view, I can just have fun making 3D pictures. Well, I haven't been blessed with any HDR sightings myself but even on my poor old outdated SDR 709 4K TV I am stunned by how good regular Blu-ray looks on it, so I stopped watching 3D a while back, I really can't be bothered with it any more.

download the following hdr10 media content onto a thumb drive and take it into a local retailer that has an HDR capable TV (such as the samsung JS9500) which can play the file in full fidelity….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post11356104

Funny. I have now seen The Martian in 3D (Christie 6P laser projection/Dolby 3D), standard 2D (Sony 4K), and in HDR (Dolby Cinema). I didn't care much for the 3D in this movie, though it didn't hurt it any. As for HDR, I didn't notice ANYTHING different about the HDR showing from the 2D showing I saw. I LOVED the Dolby cinema for its absolutely massive screen and sharp image, but nothing about HDR stood out at all.

I also attended the CEDIA convention in Dallas last week. I got demonstrations of HDR in front projection from various vendors (including Sony) and also from flat panels (VIZIO reference with Dolby Vision). The front projection stuff made a minimal difference at best, especially in the movie clips they used. The Vizio demo was far better but even then a lot of what they were doing was almost too much and wreaked of overcompensating (think bad 3D trying to hit your nose). The LG OLED displays made a FAR FAR bigger impression for me. Absolutely stunning dynamic range without any gimmicks at all. They absolutely trounced any HDR demos I saw on the floor.

the roaming reporter from AVS (Scott) would seem to disagree, see the hyperlink in this quote in a post by fellow insider 2themax -
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...v#post11409376

raises the question, is Scotty a Dolby shill or, did he utilize a superior QoE (quality of experience) image analysis methodology (sequential auditorium peeking) than you did?....accurate methods for assessing the quality of HDR are important and are being investigated - ftp://vqeg.its.bldrdoc.gov/Documents..._HDR_final.pdf
