Default Ohmmagod!!

Gracias senor!! While on the subject of stupid questions, how do ohms apply to receivers and speakers, and how is 4 ohms different than 8 ohms, and which is better??

Ohms is a measure of electrical resistance. Speakers present a certain amount of resistance, typically 8 ohms, and receivers will drive a certain amount of resistance, typically 6-8 ohms. There's no benefit that I'm aware of for 4 vs. 8 ohm speakers. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that your speaker load can be driven by your receiver e.g. 6 ohm speakers driven by a receiver which will drive a 6 ohm load.

Right; there is no correlation between a speaker's impedance and its sound quality. There are some mighty good 8+ Ohm speakers out there, and the Martin Logans we're such fans of regularly dip to 1 Ohm at certain frequencies.

Mildly amusing aside: I'd never heard of 6 Ohm speakers before I started reading this forum (4 & 8 Ohm yes, but not 6). I cynically think that advertising a 6 Ohm rating is receiver manufacturers' way of trying to "one up" their products without actually investing the cash in the engineering to do so...

Yep. My Auras are 6 ohm as well. As long as you match the resistance between the receiver/amp and the speakers, as Rur stated, you'll be fine.

Timbre is sometimes called "The Color of Music" and sometimes called "The Sound Quality". Sounds may be generally characterized by pitch (frequency), loudness, and quality. Sound "quality" or "timbre" describes those characteristics of sound which allow the ear to distinguish sounds which have the same pitch and loudness.
