Accept that right now Disney really doesn't care about the old films, they care about putting the new ones out and making money. Why are they going to spend money on the old films when they could release them as is and people will still buy? Until Disney comes out and says they are releasing the original versions, assume it isn't happening and move on.
If my friends can be trusted, Disney's archivists were on top of this Day One. Say what you want about modern tweaking, the company has been fanatical about protecting their assets going back to the 1930's. Believe me, don't believe me, LucasFilm already had their film archives in terrific shape, Disney's team started their own process of evaluating what they had just purchased and what they needed to protect for preservation.

Either way they should be digitally removed.
Why introduce more revisonism when what it needs is less revisionism, that is correct timing that would hide them?

Before I knew ANYTHING about brightness and contrast on a TV -- back in High School when I was a slobbering idiot when it came to such things -- I would use the laserdisc for Star Wars to set both. Match the black of space against the black of the letterbox, go up one click. Futz with the contrast. Then put in any other movie.

I never saw the matte boxes. When I see screen grabs with matte lines and garbage mattes, all I think is, "Hey, friend, turn your brightness down." Of course, maybe I'm still a slobbering idiot.

The mattes don't need to be digitally erased. Some people just don't seem to realize that the current Blu-rays all have incorrect and boosted contrast and that the old laserdisc transfers are too bright.

If a set came out with the correct brightness/contrast levels and they're being watched on a calibrated TV then mattes shouldn't be a problem.

I was watching the Aladdin bd promos section and they put the episode 7 episode right in the middle of the disney promos and used the Lucas logo alone. Weird and interesting times we are at. I did not see a single marvel promo which I found interesting.

I can see it now:

Now for the first time out of the Disney vault we bring you Star Wars, the way it was meant to be and now in 8k.

Disney titles have been great and beautiful on bd so it wouldn't surprise me. I'm going to download harmys version in bd format to put next to my sw bd set while I wait.

so i am wondering about those unaltered versions. Especially A New Hope would that even work. We have Han talk to a "guy" named Jabba at Mos Eisley. Clearly that would not work with Return of the Jedi when he is a big slug and not a guy I believe there are other as well. Also surrounding Mos Eisley in the unaltered version the place looks like a small village that clearly would not work either.

The unaltered version of A New Hope doesn't have the scene with Han and Jabba. That was added to the Special Edition release.

He's talking about the originally filmed scene when Jabba was just a fat dude in some clothes.

Not the one where they turned him into CGI to match the RotJ look.

Yes. But that was never part of the 1977 released film, it was added to the 1997 special edition with the CGI facelift so it matched Return of the Jedi.

No crap. The point is that that wasn't in the theatrical release of ANH so it wouldn't be considered part of the "unaltered versions".

It's a sad world where many people don't realize that Jabba didn't originally pop up until Jedi.

I can probably live with all the digital alterations, to a greater or lesser extent, but I cannot stand the bit where Han walks over Jabba's tail. That whole scene is better left out.

Those of us who read the novelization (in early 1977) and the comics disagree.

I Can live with it too. The movies looks stunning on Blu-Ray. Most of the added stuff actually makes sense and the new effects put in looks fantastic I am talking about most of the fixed stuff. There are only 4 scenes i can think of that really irks me. Han NOT shooting first is a disgrace. Obiwan making that weird sound to scare the sandpeople and Darth vader saying NOOOOO!! and the added Ewok stuff at the end of Jedi. Most of all the other stuff i have no problem with.
