I thought it was great. I still think The Other (1972) is a better movie.

I saw The Other for the first time when the Blu-ray came out. The acting is painfully bad. My family asked if we could watch something else - something they've never done because of bad acting.

I would agree with the rental first. The twist is seen in the first 5 minutes and then it delves into a whole other film than what the trailer let's on.

This is nowhere on the same level as It Follows or The Babadook personally.

From what I've seen, it seems like this film has fallen victim to poor marketing decisions.

Is the trailer great?
Yes. Absolutely.

Is it representative of the film?
No. Not at all.

Did I love the film anyway?
In short, yes.
I was a little disappointed when I first realized that the film I was watching was not going
to be what I expected, but I really enjoyed the way it all played out. It reminded me a lot
of one of my favorite films, Funny Games.

So, my suggestion is... If you've seen the trailer and are expecting the movie that is being
marketed, maybe watch it before you buy it so you know what you're getting yourself into.
If you're going solely off of what people are saying about it, I put my vote in to add it to
your collection post haste.

Even though ive read enough to know that what I expect from the movie by watching the trailer isn't what it is, im gonna buy this out of curiosity. Hopefully im pleasantly surprised.

Agreed. Really wanted to like this, but it just wasn't very good. And the twist was really lazy and would have worked better if it was revealed early and used throughout the film

Agree with those saying this is not a blind buy. The reveal isn't managed particularly well, and I don't see this having a lot of replay value. It's solid, but not great; worth a rental.

Only had time to watch half of it last night, but yes, i figured a twist of it within the first 5min too. Hoping there's more to it than that, it's not bad so far, glad it was only $15, as I'm not over the moon about it. I think it's a lesser version of A Tale of Two Sisters, which has replay value. Again, only half way through, but those are initial thoughts.

Edit :finished it. Guess i ended my first half right before the Funny Games-esque third act. The horror of desperation and conviction of a lie is executed rather effectively, though not terribly original. Still, perhaps repeat viewing will make this more enjoyable, because one can then just enjoy the smaller story details and performances. It is filmed with a constrained stillness that is appropriately unnerving. So, im not unhappy with it as a blind buy,but rentals would be a safer bet and /or wait for the $15 or less price point. And only feature is a 12min interview.

It's OnDemand for $4.95 and Amazon Video for $4.99 to watch - So I'll view it one of those ways being Blind Buying this is too risky

oh please - to each his (or her ) own, but It Follows was nothing but an overpraised student made film. Goodnight Mommy was far superior in my mind.

I really liked this movie, but I went to the cinema with a group of friends expecting to see the movie from the trailer. Everyone was really uncomfortable for the whole thing, and only three out of seven of us liked it. The woman who'd made the suggestion hated it. I liked it, and would even almost say I loved it, but it's not a movie I'll be watching again any time soon.

In short: Definitely do not blind buy this movie.

As far as the reveal:
[Show spoiler]I felt like it was never really meant to be a secret in the first place. It was clear what was going on within the first ten minutes. It took me a while to 'let go' of the idea that it was meant to be hidden, and I did find that feeling really distracting for a large portion of the movie.

YMMV, but I felt like it really kind of increased the suspense and the feeling of barreling toward what you knew was going to be some seriously intense experiences for the mother. I felt so horrible for her.

Wow, based on the combination of all the posts in here, this is a very polarizing film.

I'll be renting it first for that reason alone, as I do remember loving the trailer, which is what made me want to see it, but, I forgot what the trailer was like as its been months since I watched it. I just put it on my MUST SEE list, and forgot about it. Maybe that's a good thing as you're all in agreement that it mischaracterizes the real film

However, you all fighting over it being comparable to Babadook or Audition makes no difference to me as I like them both for different reasons

That's an interesting take.
[Show spoiler]I also felt that it was clear in the first 10 minutes, but that it was a mistake on the part of the filmmakers. The whole movie, I kept thinking, they're not just going to rip off The Other, are they? But I was hoping that it was just a red herring and that there would be some other reveal. Then, when it did turn out to just be a retread of The Other, I was very disappointed.
I do suspect that perhaps you're giving the movie too much credit, but I think I will give it one more watch with this idea in mind.

Yeah, you're right.
This has to be true.
[Show spoiler]
The twin being dead was obviously never meant to be a secret.
They'd have to think we're all stupid to not know within the first ten minutes. I mean, it wasn't even subtle!
In the first ten minutes we were privy to 1.only Elias doing the talking, 2.Lucas constantly going into dark places, 3.the mom clearly never acknowledging Lucas, and 4.there was the purposely metaphorical image of Elias on the little canoe boat by himself looking at his reflection in the water alone. Come on! They gave it away on purpose, for a reason.
Maybe they gave it away as a distraction to us viewers so we would feel sympathy for Elias? To throw us off the scent that it's he who is doing the scary things to the mom, not the other way around as the trailer would have you think. Which means the first ten minutes, and the trailer, are purposely trying to throw our scent off

For me the acting was fine. There's 1 particular scene that's shocking in The Other, where they found the baby. Goodnight Mommy is a lil bit "tamer" than The Other imo.
