I don't see iTunes going anywhere in the near Future its User base is just to large.
Where does the impression that the Studios want to phase out iTunes come form? They allow earlier release Dates on iTunes then before street date. Sounds more like a promoting then demoting.

One thing Apple has with iTunes over UltraViolet is there user base (the iPhone is out there), the known name and it's user friendly access.

On top of that after the release of the App Store on Apple TV... about time Apple...we might see a major increase like the iPhone did. Or maybe not we will see.

There has been chatter at the NAB from some individuals that iTunes might be the next VHS/DVD "the common format".
Some comments.
Disney has also partnered with Vudu, Microsoft, Amazon and Google Play for Disney Movies Anywhere, so I wouldn't say the relationship between Disney and Apple is tightening.

Early digital releases are not just on itunes they are also on the other digital providers.

Itunes will never be the common format because there is a fractured digital marketplace with UV, iTunes, Amazon, Google and Microsoft all fighting for market share and all incompatible with each other (outside of Disney). Also iTunes is limited to idevices and is not accessible on Android devices and the roku.

The phasing out of itunes talk partially comes from Warner and Sony not offering itunes digital copy codes and the anti Apple crowd. You are right, itunes has a large base and is not going anywhere. The lack of digital copy codes from some studios does not mean those studios aren't making a lot of money off their iTunes digital sales.
