SYNOPSIS

This dark horror film from director Ulli Lommel was based on the real-life crimes of Fritz Haarman (Kurt Raab), the so-called "Vampire of Dusseldorf" who murdered over 25 young boys, drank their blood, and sold their flesh as black-market meat. Several German films had depicted Haarman's murderous exploits, most notably Fritz Lang's classic M (1931), but Lommel's version is far more graphic and horrifying. Produced by filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who also appears, the film revels in pseudo-Expressionistic imagery which sears itself into the viewer's mind. Raab's performance is reminiscent of both Peter Lorre in M and Max Schreck in the vampire classic Nosferatu (1922), but is unforgettable in its own right. A deeply disturbing cinematic poem about the face of true evil, this overlooked classic has developed a cult following, but is not recommended for sensitive viewers.

Really good and dark movie. Easily the best thing Ulli Lommel directed. Definitely an underrated film that I'm glad is coming to Blu-Ray.

So Ulli Lommel made more than ONE movie that didn't suck balls?

Sounds great, albeit really dark, and gruesome.

Never heard of this but it sounds awesome and I'll certainly be picking it up.

Does anyone else think that between Criterion, Arrow, Kino, Grindhouse, and Shout/Scream that we're getting really spoiled?

Easily Lommel's best film and will be great to upgrade from the DVD, one of the early Anchor Bay released DVD titles, as was Immoral Tales (and even The Black Cat a bit later). Looks like Arrow is becoming the new Anchor Bay of the Blu-ray era.

From the days when Ulli Lommel was still a promising director who hadn't blotted his copybook. Wanted to see this one for years but never enough to pay the outrageous prices secondhand DVDs go for.

Guess I can take credit for this one. Just bought a used copy of the DVD last month at FYE.

As is usually the case with US Arrow releases, I've never heard of this. Not sure if it's my cup of tea.

Still extremely uncertain if this is something I'm going to get, I've been doing research and not much of it is out there. I'm not into the graphic cannibalism thing at all (and in unrelated/off topic note, naziploitation is a no-no for me as well). I wouldn't consider myself a sensitive viewer. Just using them as examples, Island of Death was pretty shocking, but not as I thought it was going to be but Salo was terrifying and outright shocking.

This looks cool and I will definitely pick it up when the price is right!

Hopefully Arrow USA's store will be open by then.

Was this another Arrow title that Amazon never got stock of or just enough to fill preorders?

Is Amazon US deliberately trying to screw Arrow over? This is happening way too often - the sooner Arrow gets its own US store up and running, the better.

Is this a straight up horror film/documentary mix?
