Default Monterey Pop

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two different Monterey sets besides the price? One has 1 disc and the other has 2 discs so there is obviously more content but I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth the extra $10 bucks or so.

If any Criterion titles go OOP, they give a heads up before it happens.

The rumor about the BBS box is, at this point, just a rumor. It's based on a reasonable supposition, that Criterion might be losing the rights to Head, largely because they put the documentary that had been on the Head disc in the set on the individual release of Five Easy Pieces. But it's still only a wild-ass guess.

The box set includes the film Monterey Pop -- including all of the extras that are on the single-disc release of that film -- plus a second disc with two other films: Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey.

If you like either Hendrix or Redding or especially (like me) both, it's definitely worth the extra money.

Thank you for helping me sift through the basics...that's easy then...like you I am a huge fan of Jimi and that alone is worth the extra cheddar. Thanks Jay

Last night I finished watching Gates of Heaven and Vernon, Florida. Really cool, eccentric little documentary films. Director Errol Morris is now a favorite filmmaker of mine. I really loved the latter film, Vernon, Florida, as it reminded me of a quirky other oddity of a documentary film called Mule Skinner Blues (also shot in the Florida panhandle/northern Florida). Has anyone seen this?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290010/

Maybe the similarities ended with the kazoo playing, Florida country folks and the fact that its a documentary, but the characters in Vernon, Florida were extremely entertaining. I never realized how passionate turkey hunting can be, and how esoteric and philosophical some people are down there, living in a sparsely populated village. There were times where I was wondering what some of the people would say next... it was totally unexpected.

Gates of Heaven, being Morris's first proper feature film (as Werner Herzog "ate his shoe", having bet against him for never being able to finish a film), is also pretty interesting. How often do you see pet cemetary culture? It's an often sad portrayal of people who believe that their pets will always be with them after they die, but rarely do you see this all revealed in a film, complete with mini character studies of the people involved in a pet cemetary. It's a beautiful movie and for a director's first movie, its a revelation.

How often does B&N send out coupons? I became a member right before the sale in July and only got one coupon in the mail about two months later. I can wait a few extra days if they usually send more out but if the coupons are sporadic I'll just take advantage of the member discount again on Day 1 of the sale.

It's pretty hit or miss. I didn't get any snail-mail coupons for the last sale but I did for this sale. Some people also get email coupons; I've never gotten any. If I were you I'd wait a week or two to see if you get some coupons, especially if you've got your eye on a boxed set. Those 20% coupons stack nicely, when you can get them.

Happy shopping.

I love Cassavetes and I like to think of him as the start of an independent film movement in the United States that we are still feeling today.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Faces are two essential films.

This is always a good thread to bookmark and visit right before the Barnes & Noble sale:

Barnes & Noble coupons

Thanks to the forum members who find and post them! I've already printed out the two in-store coupons and am ready to roll!

And speaking of great deals from Barnes & Noble, they're offering the Les Blank: Always for Pleasure box set for $29.99 at eBay. That's not a bad price for a sku with a MSRP of $124.95, and they apparently have many copies available!

As a Criterion blu-ray completist (I just received my 300th title in the mail today), I couldn't pass it up. Happy hunting, my friends ...

Thanks a lot for this, I never intended to get that set, but after reading dvdtalk review (since there is no review here yet) I decided to give it a chance, I do enjoy documentaries it is just that most of the time prefer to use my time watching my neverending list of films, it's hard for me to decide to start watching a documentary, but since most of these are less than an hour I might give them more chance.

Maybe a price mistake?, seems most sets are lower than normal:

By Brakhage set $29.99
Tati set $49.99
Cassavetes set $49.99
Qatsi trilogy $39.99
Trilogy of Life $39.99
Shoah $39.99
Rossellini set $39.99
Three Colors $39.99

Ray is an artist of the highest caliber. His film instincts were impeccable and I think he understood the language of cinema as much as any director that's ever lived. He always had the camera in the ideal place (See the opening on the Ganges in Aparajito), didn't hold scenes any longer than needed and refrained from heavy-handedness. Ray's films are elegant and relaxing to me.

The director that has these qualities in spades today is Kiarostami. It's like opening a bottle of fine wine and enjoying every last drop.

Must be a mistake. I ordered the Zatoichi boxed set for $39.99, and I'm expecting it to be cancelled at any minute. I also don't think they're going to have many orders for Moonrise Kingdom at that $99.99 price point!

If the set was listed on bn.com there would be a chance they'd honor the sale. With eBay they can just claim listing error and cancel them.

I expect they'll cancel my order.

Congratulations on 300!

And, wow, thanks for the tip. Went to BN's ebay store and did most of my Christmas shopping. Already. Are you a fat guy in a red suit with a white beard? I'll leave some cookies out for you next month.
