The primary differences relate to supplements and music scores.
DVDBeaver claims the transfers for "The Rink" and "Easy Street" are different on the Spanish and UK BFI releases. Evidently the restorations for those two were not done in time when the Spanish set was released. Guess we'll have to wait and see for the Essanays (tho for me I'm holding out for the BFI release, just for what I expect to be marginally superior encoding by Lyris )

3 days and it's still in California!! Media Mail=

Never will I order from them again...this new way of shipping with stamps.com is terrible! Preorders should be more of a priority than this, especially for those supporting the company directly. At this rate it says I'll have it by the 20th!! That's almost 2 weeks to ship a pre-ordered movie!

I'm right there with ya. Info was sent to USPS on the 10th, there was no movement until today. It took 3 days to go from L.A. to Bell Gardens which is in L.A. County.

I have both of those disks and the difference to me appears to be just different black level settings... mastering differences, not restoration. Cineteca Bologna did the original scans and restoration, then they did a screening where they recorded the live soundtracks to the picture. That was what was released in Spain. Flicker Alley did some adjustments to CB's version (throwing some of the sound out of sync in the process). BFI conformed the old Carl Davis scores to match the CB prints. I'm pretty sure they all use the same basic film print and transfer.

That is precisely the same "non-movement" I share.

I admittedly only have the BFI set and not the Spanish set. I was basing my observations on the comparisons caps of The Rink over at DVDBeaver. If they're supposedly from the same restoration but with different black levels, why do the corresponding BFI shots for The Rink show more scratches and less cropping? I agree they may have been derived from the same print but if it's just down to mastering differences, why did some shorts (based on the comparison shots of The Floorwalker) end up looking virtually identical with the BFI set (albeit with slightly inferior encoding)?

Returning to the Essanays, here's what one of the collaborators of the restoration project had to say on Nitrateville from a post in January with regard to Spanish vs Flicker Alley sets:

Quote:
My suggestion is to wait for the Flicker Alley release. [The Spanish] edition was somewhat rushed to meet the requirements of the European distributor, ARTE, and its versions of POLICE and (especially) A NIGHT OUT are well below the standard of the planned American release, although that is not likely to happen before summer.

The BFI and Flicker Alley release of the Mutuals are the same transfers. The spainish blu ray was rushed to be release because they would lose copyright on those films. Also the spainish blu ray of the The Rink is from a sound reissue where the BFI and Flicker Alley is from a better print that is uncropped with more work done by David Shepard.

That's good to know. You should have it waiting for you then I'm sure

They emailed back and said again that the holiday delayed it (it's only one day, sheesh) and that media mail takes up to 9 days. But my issue was that they shoulda shipped the preorders earlier as a benefit to those who support them.

Oh, well, beating a dead horse at this point with them. They gave me a 10% discount code which i will most likely never use. Would rather have had them credit me the shipping I paid.

Mine updated just now and it's in Chicago, doubt I'll get it till tomorrow though, seeing as how it took three days to leave the origin state of CA for them!

Ah... When I compared the Spanish disk to the Flicker Alley one, I was focusing mostly on the titles that were out of sync on the Flicker Alley release. I must not have directly compared The Rink.

Anybody know why this is being referenced as the third Chaplin restoration from Flicker Alley?

I see there is a set from his Keystone films, but it seems to be pretty old and only on DVD.

The Flicker Alley Keystone set on DVD is fantastic. It isn't old at all... two or three years.

I am hoping there will be a blu ray release next year for that. I plan on picking up Mutual and this March next year.

It is the third restoration. Keystone was the first one, but they didnt give it a blu ray release.

They started the restorations since early 2000s

Mine's out for delivery FINALLY from Flicker.

Glad to hear the transfers are up to par. At least we are getting quality restoration for all his work, that's all one can ask for, and that's what these classics deserve.

Happily diving into some of these tonight
