The "floodgates" may not be a swarm of Warner Bros titles coming each month but theres definitely a lot more than the past with more on the way.

Badlands was a special case because Malick twisted WB's arm. Just as Oliver Stone did when he got Warner to license Heaven & Earth to Twilight Time.

As for the Truffaut and Troell films, I think there's a difference between foreign films that Warner owns the US distribution rights to and WB, MGM, and RKO catalog titles that Warner owns outright.

So I had what I consider to be a very successful trip to Barnes & Noble this afternoon. There was a new Customer Service Rep in the video section, but he did just fine when I threw all my coupons at him and asked him to take care of me. I came away with:

The Apu Trilogy @ 27.99
Day for Night @ 14.39
In Cold Blood @ 10.99

And when I got home, the Christmas mailer with additional coupons was in my mailbox, so I'm a very happy Criterion camper!

Now if Barnes & Noble would just ship out my two eBay bargains: the Les Blank and Martin Scorsese box sets. I'm almost afraid to contact them, because I don't want the orders to be cancelled ... they did cancel and refund my Zatoichi and David Lean/Noel Coward orders.

No difference from the MGM or RKO films , theyve still always been in charge of them since theatrical release as well as home video. The only difference is that the foreign films are probably harder for Warner to market to a broader audience, thus making them easier to turn over to Criterion.
And as of this point no other label has been able to get their foreign films either so thats also pretty telling.

It seems quite obvious that theres a handful of titles Warner feels arent worth releasing themselves that Criterion has managed to talk them into giving up, what else they have is yet to be unleashed but Id say as long as its not some huge classic title its more than likely fair game.

That one makes sense. $20 > $18 after the member discount > $10 after a very generous use of the $8/$40 coupon.

I'm having a hard time making the ends meet with that Apu price though

Apu = $50 - 10% = $45 - 20% coupon = $36 - $8 0ff coupon = $28?

Warner has not "always been in charge of [the MGM or RKO films] since theatrical release". Warner had no control over them until they made a deal with Ted Turner in the mid-90s. Until that deal took place, Warner didn't even have control of their own pre-1949 catalog titles.

No, I meant the foreign films have always been theirs since theatrical distribution, which makes them just as much theirs as the Bogart and Davis titles, and even more theirs than the MGM/RKO titles. Just not as marketable due to the fact that theyre foreign.
If a title is a big seller Warner more than likely will keep it as its easier for them to market and push, but Im sure the films that arent as big or are a little more out there are more than likely up for grabs.
The only point Im making is the excuse "its with Warner" is still no longer valid. To an extent at least.

No, I think jayembee has a point. Warner owns the copyrights to their MGM/RKO titles. They own the elements, they own everything.

They probably don't hold the copyrights to The Emigrants or The New Land which isn't just a legal distinction but probably comes into play with regard to Warner's restoration priorities. Warner isn't going to restore these titles so they don't really have anything to lose by licensing their distribution rights.

Excuse is an odd choice of words and it's only marginally less valid than it's ever been.

If you got the 8off and 20% on one item which is quite unusual and somehow forgot the member on another so the clerk had to inputting everything manually. The $5 coupon usually distributes proportionally across all items when the Computer does it rather than taking it off a single ite.

He also used the $8 after deducting the 20% coupon instead of the other way which gave you an extra $1.60 (also making the item $35 before applying the 8off40)

Yes, that's almost how it was. What was especially odd ... and which I noticed at the time ... is that when he applied the first 20% off coupon (it was the coupon that came in an email last night), it gave me 20% off on each of the three items. Usually it only applies to one item. But he did, in fact, only scan it once, so I'm at a loss to explain how it happened ...

Nice deals indeed. Sucks they cancelled your Zatoichi sent but shipped others. I wanted to try for it too but it was all gone by the time I was able too .
