Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow Of New Despair is coming to North America, courtesy of XSEED. The game will be released this Fall. The game is a “reimaginging” of Earth Defense Force 2025 with a better framerate and more content. Here’s a quick feature summary:

After selecting from one of four unique playable classes and customizing their weapons, players will lead NPC troops into city-wide battles against hordes of seemingly endless giant bugs, robots, and other colossal enemies. Two players can enjoy local co-op and versus modes, while online co-op supports up to four players to increase the odds against this massive alien threat.

Though I'm a fan of the series, I wonder if they'll innovate with new ideas or offer the same experience in 1080 HD?

I remember trying one of the Xbox 360 games. I'm on a Japanese kick lately so I'll definitely be looking into this (though I still need to get Disgaea 5 first!).

The buildings look more detailed, though the game looks like a replica of the previous game, which is good on many levels, but also a bit repetitious like an updated sports game can be each year, with subtle changes at best. Fun series, but each game is almost like playing the previous game since they don't vary it up enough. Maybe later in the game it innovates some stuff.

A few too many Japanese series have been like that lately. I think part of it is that many of the games are still being developed for both PS3 and PS4 (understandably, given the market conditions). Still, it looks like fun, and if it dips to $29 or so I'll definitely give it a try.

Watching that video again, the frame rate looks fast, something many of the prior games struggled with on the PS3 and PS2 once the Ant action builds up in numbers.
