Universal Studios Only Yesterday (1991)

Getting a Blu-ray from GKIDS with what sounds like a Studio Ghibli–produced English dub.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/animation...lease-20150824

I hope a Blu-ray and dub of Ocean Waves is around the corner.

Excellent news!

A little disappointed it isn't Disney releasing it, because Gkids slipcovers don't match at all with each other.

Wow, color me surprised. I honestly thought it would remain in limbo forever. Great job, GKIDS!

This is pleasantly surprising news. Disney had the rights to this for some time, but did nothing with it here. Glad it's coming out.

Just saw the news today. Should have known this would happen after importing from Hong Kong a few weeks ago. I also imported Ocean Waves. So maybe we'll have some luck there. ;-)

I hear ya. Only a month ago I got the Taiwan BD for Only Yesterday. Was gonna get the JP BD for Ocean Waves but with this announcement I think I'll sit tight and see what happens.

My girlfriend likes watching Ghibli films in English so I'll be picking this up.

Excellent! Pleased it's not one of those pretentious Disney Ghibli releases with the damn gold slipcovers because it now hopefully has a chance to go below $25 retail. Plus, there are other Ghibli movies not put out by Disney, such as Takahara's own Grave of the Fireflies. Is this really the last of his films not to be released on American/Region 1 blu-ray?

My Neighbor the Yamadas for feature films and specifically Takahata, and Ocean Waves if you meant all of Ghibli

I'm guessing Universal will release this one with GKIDS. If so, Universal has been spoiling us with all these indie and foreign acquisitions lately (last month, they inked a deal with Broad Green).

Would be nice if Yamadas got a local release also. Disney put it out on DVD, but they seem to have indicated they're done with Ghibli Blu-rays ("Complete your Ghibli collection with Spirited Away"). Maybe they'll license it out to GKIDS.

There's Takahata's pre-Ghibli movies which Studio Ghibli have recently put out in Japan. Not sure if those will be coming Stateside.

Lol, the Disney slips are most definitely not the reason they're $25 at retail. In fact, Kaguya and Poppy Hill were both $25 as well... and Poppy Hill is actually MORE expensive than a lot of Disney Ghibli blu-rays at the moment. The Disney slips are beautiful anyway, and look amazing on a media rack/shelf since they're all uniform.

I don't even know what you're lolling at, but I am not saying the slips have anything to do with price, just that they're pretentious. I'm saying I'm pleased it's not a Disney release because then it would be $25 at retail as opposed to anything less from any other studio.

Sorry, I misread your post. Either way, you're wrong about the price. Gkids releases are in the same ball park as Disney Ghibli releases. I think the Disney slipcovers are far superior to the tacky, uneven Gkids slips. To each their own I guess.

This is such a welcome news! I'm so glad GKIDS picked it up. One of the most beautiful and poignant films ever - animated or otherwise. It's been a long time coming but I'm glad it's in safe hands now. Even though I imported the Taiwanese edition very recently, I will definitely pick this up.

Who cares about a stupid cardboard o-ring. Now if only Gkids could get the rights to Song of the South.

2003 version of Taeko's favorite song.

Poppy Hill dropped to $11.99 around Black Friday though, about 2 months after it was released, that's when I got it.

I think Disney is fine, but I like the way GKIDS have theirs with the logo and the large spine version of the cover and not just the small box. I think the black makes it more understated where the shiny Disney gold makes it look a little too vain and standoutish. It'd be nice if they all got together and let Ghibli release a set of slipcovers to purchase online that match their Japan releases or something.

When MNTY didn't come out with the last batch I wondered if it was because of this film but since Disney's not doing it I guess they can't do a double release, but Disney could be waiting for it so they could try and get promotion off it being out at the same time.

I'd like for Ocean Waves to get a US dub but it was just a TV film. Would I buy it still? Yes, but I'm not too concerned about it.

Wow, I never thought this would happen! Good on GKids.

I've never actually seen this movie because it hasn't been released stateside; very much looking forward to seeing it now.
