Default Is 2015 the greatest year for movies ever?

Jurassic World - the highest grossing film of all time until...
Star Wars VII - probably the biggest most hyped movie ever
Furious 7 - biggest action movie ever and in the series
Mission Impossible - best in the series
Ex Machina - great sci-fi thriller
Inside Out - one of the best Pixar/animated films
Mad Max - another awesome action flick
Southpaw - One of the best boxing movies
Creed - best boxing movie since, well, Rocky
The Martian - great
Sicario - intense, awesome
It Follows - Best indie horror film since Halloween

Hateful 8 - 75mm theatre experience, Tarantino's best in years?
The Revenent - Dicaprio's oscar winning performance?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I think this year's films have been a load of poppycock.

I mean financially yeah, a lot of those films have done great but there's also been a lot of crap like Jem, Terminator, We Are Your Friends. And to be honest I found most of those better films to be middling in terms of actual enjoyment myself. I think last year was more solid but I'm also not really a "greatest ever" person.

Of course not. Every true film buff knows 1939 was the greatest year ever. Many of the movies coming out in 2015 will be largely forgotten in a few more years - or even months.

Not even the best of the 2010s. Not even close.

Pretty much, this year has been a bit disappointing.

Outside of Carol and The Lobster, it's kind lacking in real standout movies.

Like I love Mad Max as much as the next person, and I'm happy it's getting the accolades that it is, but in any other year this decade thus far, it wouldn't even be up for consideration from competition.

Comedy has been severely lacking this year, outside of the odd indie flick like Mistress America, the film I found funniest this year is a film where a woman
[Show spoiler]beats a dog to death
...talk about putting things in perspective.

Most Blockbusters failed to really impress beyond passive amusement. Honestly, As much as I love going to the cinema, the only film that really offered a cinematic experience was Mad Max and Sicario thus far (I'm sure The Revenant, Star Wars and Hateful Eight will deliver), everything else, while I loved, I probably would have had the same experience watching at home than I did at the cinema.

I think that's what'll ring over 2015 for me, I could have just watched most these films at home and had the exact same experience.

This year's list of movies is a giant steaming pile of crap when compared to a year of classics like 1963 for example ...

From Russia With Love
The Great Escape
The Birds
Cleopatra
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
8 1/2
Charade

And on and on.

Years from now, the only movie from 2015 that people might be talking about is 'Star Wars'.

No, I give you...

1939
Gone With the Wind
The Wizard of Oz
Mr Smith Goes to Washington
Stagecoach
Ninotchka
Young Mr. Lincoln
The Roaring Twenties
Dark Victory

1940, 41 and 42 also excellent. What a run golden Age Hollywood was on heading into the war.

1967 Kickstarted New Hollywood
1969 was modern Western Heaven.
1982 is epic for sci-fi and genre fans.
1984 was so fun and rewatchable with Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.
1994 was a game changer led by Pulp Fiction
So was 1999 - Fight Club, Matrix, Sixth Sense, American Beauty, Being John Malkovich...
2008 was impressive and is when the super hero explosion that we are still riding really took off.
I would say 2013 was huge, may not have had the tentpole blockbusters that this year brought but what a line up of dramatic powerhouses.

In short...no. But some people did make a lot of $$$ so for them, yes.

You're all wrong, 1968 is the greatest year for movies ever. With some strong competition from 1972 and 1979.

I get that you're excited about the recent films, and I have no problem with that. But I find it hard to believe we can look back on this year objectively and think this was a great year for film. It just doesn't stand out.

[Show spoiler]And for the record, I thought this year was terrible but that's just my humble opinion.

Meh, not really. Some super great films this year, but no more than average for me.

Slow West
It Follows
Room
Ex Machina

Only 5 stars for me.

Am super excited for Hateful Eight, The Revenant, Joy, and Carol though.

This has been the worst year in movies for me since 2006. I've seen 71 movies so far this year and only 9 maybe 10 I enjoyed enough to own on bluray. I still have about 20 left to see for the year so maybe I will enjoy a few more. But quality has been lacking this year for me

Meh, making money doesn't = a great film. Not even the best of the series.

Using a Fast & Furious film as an example of why this year is good...? Yikes.

Very good film, yeah! I dunno if it's been on of Pixar's best though, but definitely better than recent attempts.

This year has not been very good. Now if The Force Awakens blows everyone away, that alone could make up for the lack of quality films. Especially in terms of big budget entertainment. Looking at the list of movies that have dominated at the box office, they're not that impressive. Jurassic World and Furious 7 both made over a billion and a half worldwide, and the former was merely decent and the latter was borderline crap. Minions made another billion, and that wasn't very good. Avengers 2 was a disappointment. Mad Max: Fury Road was overrated. SPECTRE was a huge letdown. Ant-Man was meh. And don't get me started on Fifty Shades of Grey which made over half a billion.

There were some pleasant surprises along the way like Kingsman: The Secret Service, Goosebumps, Creed, It Follows, The DUFF, and Spy. Inside Out, The Martian, and Rogue Nation lived up to the hype. And of course, there were the movies that deserve serious awards consideration like Room, Spotlight, and a handful of others(including some of the aforementioned films such as Creed). But far too often, I found myself leaving the theater(or turning off my Blu-ray player) and just shrugging and saying to myself "that was ok, nothing special".

As others have said, 1994 by far. Look at how diverse of a list some of the more popular movies from that year were:

Pulp Fiction
The Shawshank Redemption
The Lion King
Forrest Gump
The Professional
Ed Wood
Clerks
True Lies
Dumb and Dumber
Chungking Express
Interview with the Vampire
The Three Colors trilogy
Speed
Quiz Show
The Crow
The Mask
Natural Born Killers
Heavenly Creatures
Bullets Over Broadway
Little Women
Eat Drink Man Woman
The Legend of Drunken Master

Action movies, comedies, award winners, indie films, foreign films, and one of the greatest animated films ever. It was a great year for movies of all genres.
