I'd love to read discussions of Star Wars: The Force Awakens without having to click on spoiler tags all of the time, so this thread is intended for feedback from those who have already seen the film.
Moderators, feel free to delete this thread if it's overkill in the forum, but I think that it's the right thing to do. If you have not yet seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then be forewarned that HERE THERE BE SPOILERS! Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-18-2015 at 04:47 PM. |

I'm in the middle of writing a review, so I'll post my full thoughts in the original thread. Short summary: loved it. Best one since 1980.
But... I don't know, I just felt like Han didn't get the send off he deserved. I loved his death scene. I felt it was beautifully handled. I can't think of anything more heroic than to die while trying to save his son's soul. But then we get back after Starkiller base is destroyed, and everybody's celebrating. Do you know who you just lost?? Stop celebrating! Then we don't even get a funeral. I almost felt as if the audience, as well as the characters, were denied the right to mourn one of the most beloved characters of all time. This is Han Solo we're talking about. Han Solo. Sure, Leia looks bereaved, and Chewie looked legitimately to be in hell due to the loss of his best friend, but outside of that, nothing. That is literally my one major complaint about this film. I loved every other single aspect. And I can't wait for Episode VIII and more Luke! |

Yay good job Owl!
First off I loved the movie and can't wait to see it again in a couple hours. Overall on first viewing I would give the film an 8.5/10. May go up on second viewing. I had tears rolling down my face at moments I wasn't expecting. Leia and Han first encounter really did it for me. As did the opening crawl and Chewie being a sad camper. The new cast, especially Poe and BB8, are a major success in my book. Rey and Finn are just great too. Kylo Ren, although still not fully fleshed out yet, is fantastic and filled with emotion. His force stand off Scanners style with Rey was acted and filmed great. The film does leave some to be desired and plays it overly safe at times but it's the moments in between that soar higher than ever. The more vocal and charismatic Chewie, Han moments, new Cantina scene... The details. There is a lot of love. I seen the shocking death coming a mile away but the scene was still extremely effective. The same can be said for the Finale and first appearance of our old friend. Knew it was coming but still got chills at the final shot. Thanks JJ for setting up a promising future. Yes the bar has not been crushed or reset. No it's not the second coming of a new cinema day and age... But it is the second coming of the Star Wars we grew up loving. |

On the Han thing: I think how everyone goes about their business shortly afterward works when you compare his death to Obi Wan and Qui-gon. On a personal note, as excited as I was to get Harrison Ford (and the rest of the OT cast) back I was happy they killed Han off in this movie. He was distracting on screen and felt more like Ender's Game than Han Solo. The new cast was so amazing that by the end of the movie I was ready to move on with them (reuniting with Luke) and leave AARP Han and Leah behind. eta: Dude, you've been tooling around with Chewie for how many years and now you're super impressed with his bowcaster? C'mon! |

Really good movie. But there are two things I didn't like, or not sure about.
1. The new big weapon. It gets its power by sucking in a sun. There was a wide view showing the sun being sucked up. Now, it looked like the planet was very close to the sun, so why is the planet an ice planet. Shouldn't it be more like Mercury? 2. The sword battle between Hans son and the chick and when they were separated when the planet was coming apart. I though it was weak how they were separated, I mean what a coincidence that the ground came apart right at that spot. Could have been written better, to easy of a solution on how to seperate them. And all the beats in the movie definitely reminded me of episode IV. Not that that's a bad thing. Loved that new robot. |

Good movie, just a little too derivative. Wish they would've taken some more chances with the narrative, but I'm not gonna complain cuz what we got was pretty excellent. |

A few random thoughts of mine after having seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens last night...
First random thought... As soon as Han Solo walked onto the bridge after Kylo Ren, I knew that he was a goner. The outcome was telegraphed as clear as day, with the distant shot of Han and Kylo on the bridge, the shot of Rey and Finn showing up only to watch Han from a helpless distance, and the sheer gravitas of the cinematography and the setup. When I saw that distant shot of Han and Kylo on the bridge, I thought to myself, "Oh man... Here we go..." Although I had stayed away from any spoilers before watching the movie last night, I just knew that one of the old-timers from the original films had to die. That's "how the Force works" with these movies, and I knew that The Force Awakens was setting us up for another Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon scenario. The Han Solo scene was quite beautiful, though. I loved everything about it, and I loved how Solo had so many moments to shine before going out gloriously. Second random thought... Rey seems to know a whole lot about the Force, eh? Well, Rey's background has been kept from us so far, and probably for a good reason. Maybe she was trained as a Jedi beforehand. I dunno. However... Did anyone else sense recognition when Luke Skywalker turned around and looked at Rey? I wonder if Luke knew exactly who Rey was. It's impossible to tell, but I love the fact that the movie ends on this outstanding cliffhanger. I wonder if the beginning of the next installment will show Luke saying to Rey, "I knew that you would find me someday.", or "Hello, my daughter/niece/whatever." Haha. Third random thought... Maz looked too cartoonish. The rest of The Force Awakens was so wonderful with the realistic and often-practical special effects, but Maz looked too much like something from the prequel trilogy movies. I loved her character, but I didn't care for the look. Fourth random thought... I wanted to see Captain Phasma take her helmet off. C'mon. Let's see some Gwendoline Christie. |
