I know that 3D isn't part of the UHD 4K Blu-Ray specifications, but can anyone tell me if that means that it can't somehow be included in future releases if hardware manufacturers decide to bulld it in as a feature regardless of the agreed specs?

I'm all in at any price early on. May buy at the same time as a UHD player if they can get this out by March.

They could include it right now on a UHD Blu-ray disc if they wanted to, using the side-by-side or top-bottom 3D format. This would allow for a stereoscopic 3D picture with twice the resolution of 1080p, as well as all the other enhancements of the UHD Blu-ray format -- 10 bit, HDR, etc. I know for a fact that Samsung's 2014 and 2015 series 4K TVs with 3D support will accept a 3840x2160 side-by-side signal and create a 3D image at 4K resolution out of it. I play PC games all the time in 4K + stereoscopic 3D on my JS9500 using TriDef and its side-by-side output function. Sure, it's not as perfect as frame-packed 3D suport would be since the effective resolution of side-by-side 3D is 1920x2160, but that is still 2x the amount of pixels of 1080p so it would be a considerable improvement.

But of course, the studios will never release a side-by-side 3D 4K Blu-ray disc and will instead force us to choose between 4K in 2D with HDR/10-bit, or 1080p in 3D instead.

The Blu-ray spec was updated to include 3D, UHD Blu would be no different: it doesn't matter what's in there at the moment as long as they can jury rig the new features to work with UHD's bandwidth constraints. Then, as with 3D BD, you'd need a new player and TV to use those features that are part of the new spec unless you had a player with architecture that allowed it to be retrofitted, like with the PS3 and 3D (though that implementation wasn't perfect).

you think current 4K + 3D tvs would be able to show 4K 3D content? For some reason I suspect not.

I can make something to test that idea when I get my TV

that would be really cool.

The only way I see 4K 3D happening with the current tvs is the aforementioned side-by-side format.

btw, I have it on good authority that certain kinds of entertainment websites are already making content like that.

There's no such thing as 4K 3D, even in theaters.

literally nobody here has said there was.

We're talking about the prospect of it in the future.

That's why it's not in the spec, but I can make it

If you look in the manuals for Sony and Panasonic 4K TVs they even state that their 3D support is for 2K/HD only. But, as someone said upthread, other makes of TVs can take an SBS/OU 4K signal and apply the relevant 3D processing to it because their implementation also works in the 4K domain.

Trouble is, if UHD 3D follows the similar frame packed spec as BD 3D then even those sets will be shit out of luck - barring another one connect box update for Samsung owners, natch. SBS is one thing, but accepting/processing something like a 3840x4365 signal (2x 2160 frame packed in the vertical with 45 blanking lines to separate them) is way beyond anything on the consumer market at the moment. That's what I mean by needing a new TV and new player (certain Sammy TVs aside) IF UHD 3D ever comes along, that sort of compatibility simply does not exist right now and can't easily be added after the fact.

I was going to try side by side, over under, and frame packed

What, on the (eventual) Sony? Good luck with that, and I don't mean that in a sarky way. Sometimes you just gotta find things out for yourself.

Oh I was guessing the Sony won't touch it, the Samsung's might but you are not thinking of the players...

Can't do it with current HDMI specification either. Needs a whole new one. Bandwidth is also an issue through current HDMI gear and not to mention disc space on the new discs.
I don't think it will ever be an option for 4K Blu-ray.
