Cries and Whispers will take you on such an emotional journey that I'd plan out a day (or night) to watch it because you won't feel like doing much else after all your emotions are sucked out of you.

And I mean that in the best possible way. It's an incredibly fantastic film.

Both of these are wonderful films, filled with symbolism and beautiful cinematography. While they're both 'heavy' in one sense or another, Cries & Whispers is so dense I recommend you have (or set aside) time for it. That's not a film I would recommend watching 30 minutes of then taking a nap. It's an emotional powerhouse, and can be gut wrenching at times. IOAW seems much lighter in comparison, but delves into the psyche during an artists time dealing with his woman and his art. Many label it 'lesser' Antonioni, but over the years it has maintained its status as one of his best films for me. So, to answer your question watch both of them when you have ample time to do so, they are both worth shutting your phone off for.

The only thing I've noticed about this thread is there are a lot of passionate fans of film and they aren't afraid to voice their opinions. Which is a good thing to me as it helps me decide if I'd like to try out a film or not based upon wether we have similar taste. Sometimes it's hard to kee track of a conversation but that's only because this thread is so active. I've not seen anyone be rude or disrespectful to another member so I'm not sure what you mean by your statement. Anyway I enjoy just reading the lively discussions that happen in this thread.

Everyone has their own tastes. Not everyone's tastes has to exactly line up with AFI lists of best movies/directors or Sight and Sound polls. There's plenty of love here for various directors and movies to counter the "hate". There are probably just as many, if not more, people in here who love Brian DePalma as there are who hate him, for example.

I mean, I disagree with about 55% of Ray Jackson's opinions on various films (mostly on ones he doesn't like) but I don't question his love of movies or think he's a snob. A bit of a geek, sure. But a snob, no.

I'm not a fan of censorship, personally. I'd rather people have the freedom to post negative or unpleasant things I may strongly disagree with (or even want to punch) than to prevent them from posting anything I don't like.

IOAW has a rep for being "mediocre" Antonioni. For the record, I think it's as good as any of his stuff, but I'm the minority mind you. The knock on it is that it's a "dirty old man movie" but I don't really see it, personally, especially since Antonioni's camera has always eroticized his actresses to some extent, even in his early days. The fact that IOAW has some brief full frontal nudity doesn't really make it much different IMO.

BTW, the Criterion version of this movie has an odd reddish contrast boost compared to international versions. A lot of people favour the Gaumont release from France.

Watched It Happened One Night yesterday for the 1st time. At #47 on the AFI list I was expecting a little more although I did enjoy the movie quite a bit. After I watch the supplements I'm sure it will help appreciate it more. Especially the "racy" pre-code scenes.
Maybe not the masterpiece I was expecting from Capra but a solid 8/10 IMO.

Vengeance is Mine comes to mind.

I didn't love Valerie and her Week of Wonders but I liked it significantly better than you did (I think you really hated it?).

Those two are the prominent ones in my mind right now. Many of the other ones you disliked I didn't have a strong opinion either way, hence the "only" 55%. I'd have to sit and go through my memory banks for the others.

As for the ones you liked and I didn't, I don't really have a strong enough opinion about movies I dislike, so they aren't coming to mind right now. I suppose how we'd rank our Kurosawa faves might differ.

But I was fairly lukewarm about both of them.

They were good to watch once.

Ahh, I mistook your criticism for them as dislike then. I do that sometimes with movies I actually like too. I'll focus more on the negatives when I post about them even when I mostly like them, and the post will sound like I hated it.
