Not quite, but here's this piece of fanart that sounds like it might be up your alley!

Speaking of the political climate of the galaxy, what does the Resistance do that the Republic itself can't do? Why are they separate entities?

So are all IMAX screens likely to keep TFA until The Finest Hours comes out at the end of January? As far as I can tell, that is the next IMAX movie on the slate.

I want to try to catch it on IMAX but likely won't have a chance in the next couple of weeks.

I enjoyed the movie, but my biggest problem with it is that it teased a LOT of NEW and original stuff that seemed to be so interesting, like the training of the new Jedi by Luke, the Knights of Ren (seriously, what the hell is that, it was only mentioned and seen once as background characters during a hallucination), how did Maz get Anakin's lightsaber? The political state of the galaxy is merely mentioned, while in ANH is was rather more talked about, even mentioning the old republic, the emperor, etc. And for a long time before the movie came out, we were wondering the identity of the characters. Who is Rey? Well now that the movie is out, we can say...
[Show spoiler]Who is Rey? Because they answered nothing.

Instead of tackling those subjects I was really interested in knowing, they went for the
[Show spoiler]''let's blow up the death star before it destroys us'' 3rd act again.

It's a great, very enjoyable movie, but they didn't risk that much, they played it safe. That's basically what I think about it
Thanks incoming for this post when I get them.

well, even though i can sit and watch them......Phanom Menace and Attack of the Clones do suck.

but they are still Star Wars......so i force myself to watch them every now and again.

and they do have some redeeming qualities in them......they just can't hold a candle to the originals or the force awakens.

Definitely agree it could've used some more exposition here and there, which is all the more frustrating because we know that some of that stuff was shot! For example, the political state of the galaxy post-ROTJ as you mention, that would probably have been sufficiently explained by keeping that deleted Senate scene in the movie.

The lightsaber was pretty annoying because I had mentally prepared myself for the fact that they maybe wouldn't go into that, and a few other questions, in this first movie but rather save the explanations for the sequels. Then I couldn't believe my ears when Maz is actually questioned about it and replies "a good question - for another time!" or something like that. I was shouting "**** you Abrams/Kasdan!" internally at that moment.

Now, I just hope that VIII and IX do answer all these questions. If they do, then I'll be able to appreciate what they were going for here. But part of me worries that they'll "forget" to give us some of these answers, the same way Lucas did in the prequels. And that would suck, and most likely be something I ended up holding against this trilogy once this is all over.

Resistance was an off the record unofficial Anti-First Order militia that the Republic secretly financed/supported.

I suppose after the Empire was defeated the Republic wanted peace, and politically going to war with the First Order may not have been a popular move. So the Republic secretly supported the Resistance's initiatives.

It's why when the Resistance are about to get hit by the Starkiller, one of Leia's underlings says "we can't do anything without the Republic's ships" or something of that nature.

Definitely agree about this one. We needed some explanation as to what the relationship is between the Republic, the First Order, and the Resistance. As it is, it is very vague, but ends up appearing that the First Order is virtually in the same position that the Empire was in in the OT, though from my understanding of the deleted scene of Leia near the beginning of the film, this is clearly not the case. I feel like they needed something, even if it was essentially an info dump. Or they could have somehow got that information into the opening crawl.

I don't feel like this really needs to be answered even in the sequels. She's an old, wise, Force-sensitive being with a bunch of artifacts and among them is this Lightsaber. Honestly, I'm fine with "It was the will of the Force" or "Destiny" or whatever that got it to Maz and finally to Rey.

My girlfriend and her kids never seen any of the SW movies so we sat down for a marathon over a few days before seeing Awakens...but I skipped Episodes I and II just explaining to them the premise since they do in fact suck hard.

Interesting. You'd think the general population wouldn't want to risk another Imperial takeover.

I'm getting anxious to see this movie again.
