God, I can't imagine how boring it must be to only ever watch the films for Star Wars. It's such a large universe out there people. Give some of the alternate forms of media a try. You'll find some incredible stuff, AND have some of your questions answered.

I'm watching Clone Wars right now, but I'll never read any of the books or comics. Too much other good sci-fi that's not forced derivatives of popular films.

Yeah but none of the other sci-fi has Chewbacca sacrificing his life head butting a planet to destroy it.

The stuff about

[Show spoiler]how is Rey such a badass with The Force?
Guess that is what sequels are for.
Presumably, Vader's helmet was buried/left on the moon of Endor. We saw it burning there in ESB.

I am still checking to see if JJ Abrams put that in the film or if it was a goof.

I have one criticism of this movie. It's the ONLY thing that's truly bothered me since my very first viewing and I don't think I'll ever get over it:

[Show spoiler]The last shot of the film. Every one of the SW movies ends with a framed picture of some sort. It's never in motion
1 - naboo celebration
2 - wedding
3 - tatooine sunset
4 - awards
5 - medical ship
6 - ewok celebration

This time? It's that AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL motion helicopter shot. That last shot is and should be iconic. Even though it's a "5" from me, I'll never forgive them for choosing THAT as the last shot.

Oh yes. The Vong Wars. What a terrible time for Star Wars fans. Fate of the Jedi wasn't much better. Yuck.

[Show spoiler]Gotta agree. That shot left me cold and abandoned the style used in Star Wars to date. Admittedly, ROTJ's ending shot is pretty lackluster compared to the other 5, which are all iconic.

Lightsabers, X-wings, and weird aliens are not what makes Star Wars special. There are stylistic and mythological elements to the visuals and stories that separate it from other blockbusters. For the most part, JJ kept that intact, but I hope Lucasfilm doesn't veer too far off the beaten path, or the franchise will just end up getting lost.

I felt that way for my first viewing, but after seeing it a 2nd time, it seems much more evenly paced.

I used to read a lot of the Star Wars EU books back in middle and high school. I know a little bit more than your average fan but I've totally lost interest in reading those books or comics. I'm just fine with watching the movies. It's not really boring.

Plus, a friend of mine has been reading a ton of those Star Wars e-books and he fills me in with stuff all time.

But that is a small complaint. This movie just reminded me of everything I love about Star Wars and the fact that We watched all 6 films in the 2 weeks before watching VII made it even more enjoyable (and showed how out of touch the Prequel Trilogy is when it comes to the real feel of Star Wars)
Saw this on Dec 24th, D-BOX motion seats, Dolby Atmos, dead centre 3rd row from the back, awesome reserved seats. Loved the movie and agree on the 5-stars.

However after this and over the course of the next 10 days or so I watched the Blu-rays with my wife and 5 year old who did not go to the cinema with me, we watched IV-V-VI then I-II-III and I have to say I enjoyed the prequel trilogy the most since original cinema-goings. I even found Anakin's awful love dialogue with Padme in Episode II to be far less vomit-inducing than ever before. I feel like Episode VII really connected me back to what made the original movies great when I was 7 years old and first saw a double billing of IV-V in Glasgow in 1980. Okay, I still acknowledge the short-comings and there are some crnge-worthy moments, but I think time had really made Episode I-II much worse in my mind than they are and it was cool to watch them in their entirety again.

At the start of II when Obi-Wan immediately jumps out the bedroom window and my wife went "woah!!!" it reminded me of how much I was laughing myself at the cinema in 2002.

I think I love all the Star Wars movies now more than ever before.

As for the new one, I think I either had a huge s***-eating grin on my face or tears welling up in my eyes through 90% of the movie, really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing it again. Really hope I can catch the new IMAX Laser to judge for myself just how good the black levels are.

It's pretty horrible. Even if it were too difficult to get a shot on the ground of the two together in frame, they could have just cut with one of the closeups of the two of them staring at the other.

I absolutely loved the final sequence.
[Show spoiler]The intensity in Hamill's face. He said so his much without uttering a word. The 360° flyaround or whatever you want to call it was excellent.
This was one of several things in the movie that told me the new trilogy was not just going to honor the old but take Star Wars to new places and styles.
