I'd seen episodes here and there long ago and when I saw this was on Hulu Plus the other night decided to stream it. Starting the 4th episode now. I'm enjoying it. Was checking out the DVD sets and I noticed the first sets that were released of each season were 6 discs and the more recent releases are each 3. What's the difference? Did they just stuff more episodes on the discs then?

Also, does the newer set by chance have the original music from when it aired? Probably not, but I heard the VHS releases did have the original music. I hate when they change the music for these. I heard this show had really good music and the stock music they have now kind of sucks. Reminds me of the music on the Dawson's Creek DVD's which annoyed me to no end because I loved that show's soundtrack and key scenes are not how I remember them now with the cheesy music they have. It can really alter a scene's feel and impact.

JJ Abrams was able to keep the pilot and the final episode of season 1's music intact. A lot of the music throughout was altered but he does mention on the commentary (I think it was there) that he worked closely to pick the replacement songs -- so it wasn't just a studio hatchet job -- he got to be involved in the process quite a bit and chose songs that were deemed acceptable for the scenes, etc.

The new 3-disc releases were apparently cramming 7-8 episodes on each disc... otherwise they're the same -- ie, no new features, etc.

If possible try picking up the 6-disc releases as the quality is likely to be much better. I'm sure you can find 'em used.
