JJ responds to Force Awakens criticisms

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rac...-abrams-853171

"The story of history repeating itself was, I believe, an obvious and intentional thing, and the structure of meeting a character who comes from a nowhere desert and discovers that she has a power within her, where the bad guys have a weapon that is destructive but that ends up being destroyed - those simple tenets are by far the least important aspects of this movie, and they provide bones that were well-proven long before they were used in Star Wars."

"Ultimately the structure of Star Wars itself is as classic and tried and true as you can get. It was itself derivative of all of these things that George loved so much, from the most obvious, Flash Gordon and Joseph Campbell, to the [Akira] Kurosawa references, to Westerns - I mean, all of these elements were part of what made Star Wars."

"What was important for me was introducing brand new characters using relationships that were embracing the history that we know to tell a story that is new."

What a load of BS; it's worse than a student telling his teacher that the dog ate his homework...; it's better for him to say that he is UN-original and basically gave the movie 15 min of his time re-hashing every SW moment out there.

I think the only real difference here is that most of the people seeing The Force Awakens have also seen Star Wars where relatively few of the people who have seen Star Wars have seen The Hidden Fortress or the 1930s Flash Gordon serials or any of a number of the existing works from which Lucas borrowed many of his inventions.
I just looooooooove how the TFA apologists keep pretending that the movie's utter lack of originality is simply a matter of basic story points or characters or situations.

I mean, that is definitely a part of it, but far from the only thing...

The first movie was pretty creative. Taking all these traditional elements and putting them in space with a (relatively) big budget was a pretty novel idea in 1977. But all of the sequels (including this one) were very formulaic.

I don't personally think 'instead of an ice planet let's do a water planet' or 'let's add more and more chases and more and more light saber duels and more and more and more effects' is particularly original.

But those things can be pretty cool and they can be really cool if the characters running around in the middle of all that spectacle are fun and interesting.

And this film had fun and interesting characters. With the exception of Empire, none of the Star Wars sequels had me this eager to see where things are going next.

Hence, the title for "The Force Awakens", a lot of people think its in reference to Rey's abilities awakening, but that may be 1 half, the other half might be the evil force of Darth Vader that he gave up during his redemption.
Snoke being Darth Vader would be symbolically retarded. I hope that's not the case. I would rather see Snoke be Jar Jar Binks who turned out to be playing the fool on purpose - quite retarded too but I dont want Darth Vader to be messed around with anymore unless he'll be in one of those new prequels.

I'm so happy someone replied point by point to that idiotic '40 plot holes in EpVII' post. When I read those a few weeks ago I was ready to sit down and type up a reply to each 'plot hole' but I decided the author wasn't worth the effort & even if I did have the time I had no outlet to post it to. Thankfully someone who has a bigger following was able to pick it apart.

#1 movies of all time don't need anyone to apologize for anything.

Movies that win razzie awards, like the PT, need apologists.

I don't know what you mean by "formulaic" in this instance; I mean, obviously there is a general formula for making popcorn movies and anything that doesn't aspire to being more than a fun popcorn pic is generally going to stick to that formula.

And obviously in the case of the prequels, we already knew going in that the period they covered included some pretty downbeat things that reverberated throughout the OT, but also made it possible to get us to the Galactic Civil War. It was a very different period in AGFFA, and that just opened up a lot of exciting possibilities.

The more I think about it the more I want Snoke to be the resurrected Vader. Not just because it would be cool to see Vader return, but also because it would make sense from a marketing point. For starters they want to dismiss as much of the old E.U as possible and Lucas was very adamant and making sure Vader could never and would never return. Disney and company would likely want to just chuck that, along with any Lucas ideas they felt the fans would dislike, right out the window. Also from a marketing standpoint it helps them reinvent the character to sell more toys as Vader is easily the most icon figure in the Star Wars universe. Finally from a marketing point it would also help keeping the mirror theme going by making Episode 8 dark and brooding like Empire and the return of the most hated villain in the galaxy could accomplish that easily.

[Show spoiler]From a story telling stand point it also makes sense, if Anakin was the chosen one who brought balance to the force then it makes sense that his ghost would unbalance that. There is a lot of speculation as to what happened in the years following Jedi as to how the force remained unbalanced. Well what if Vader didn't fully return to the light at the end? What if somehow his evil self split from Anakin and Anakin's ghost moved into the light but Vaders ghost became a separate entity and is needing a host. This could explain why Snoke is so interested in finding Luke and his interest in the Skylwaker/Solo family. It would also explain his using such a GIANT hologram to prop himself up so high in status. His whole life he was over shadowed and forced to be a slave to someone more powerful than himself. He is over compensating by projecting his image even greater than Palpatine ever did in his holograms. It also makes sense why he is a hologram, his body has to be rebuilt or maybe he wants to inhabit Rens or something else along those lines? I think it works so much better if Snoke turns out to be Vader, which is why I won't get my hopes up for it to be true.

Under no circumstances should Vader be in the new films. That ship has sailed.

The prequels are bashed because they are shit. It's as simple as that. The films insulted kids in my opinion. Now finally we have more SW films that kids and adults alike can enjoy. The real Star Wars is back.
