People who know about these things more than I do. . .

MASTERS OF CINEMA just announced EUREKA and ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS. What are the states of those two movies in terms of who will release them in the US? I know ROCCO had a new tour, but I noticed it wasn't from Janus-but Scorsese was involved, so I'm wondering if his pull will get Criterion to put it out. As for the Roeg, I've never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. I haven't heard the title mentioned in any Criterion circles, but they have a good relationship with Roeg films so it feels possible. I don't want to jump the gun if Criterion is going to put them out.

They will be released by Twilight Time and Milestone in the US, respectively.

Greatest living filmmakers.

3. Jacques Rivette
2. Agnes Varda
1. Godard

Speaking of G, I'm seeing Bande a part with an Anna Karina Q&A at the weekend.

TOP FIVE GODARD FILMS EVERYONE?
Mine changes regularly but right now.

1. Histoire(s) du cinema
2. Pierrot Le Fou
3. Every Man For Himself
4. Passion
5. Goodbye To Language

It's worth noting that according to the Sight & Sound list Godard holds the title for best film by a living filmmaker in Breathless.

While I'm at it my favourite Wenders are State Of Things and Paris, Texas, and the Road Trilogy. I'm not a massive fan though, outside of these and The American Friend.

Breathless has greatly benefited from being Godard's first child and one of the first New Wave films to launch that era.

Personally I don't think it's that great of a movie.

The primary appeal is the Jean Paul Belmondo fedora cool.

I'm not the world's biggest Godard fan, but I think he made several films that were far better and far more interesting than Breathless.

If you live in Los Angeles The Cinefamily will be having a new RESTORED DCP 4K edition of Pierrot le Fou.

I'll probably be there.

I don't know...

I, for one, think it is unequivocally great.

I think it's a fantastic film on its own. But it's also a very important film, and I try to consider that as well. As I said before I'm reading "Everything is Cinema" right now, and going back to the Preface the author talks about how even now the film seems fresh. But even more to the point, he says that immediately after its release everything else started to look old-fashioned, how if The 400 Blows was the set-up, then Breathless was the knock-out punch of the revolution in cinema, etc.

Honestly, I could watch it every day and never get sick of it.

It's probably the film I've seen more than any other and would certain disagree with Ray's assessment. It's not my favourite tho, by any means, but I do think it's amongst his most important. Further to what Brody says, regarding it being the "knock out punch" I've actually attempted to make the argument that Breathless is the "true" firing shot of the NW, rather than 400 or the Varda or Chabrol movies.

It's a pretty amazing film to examine too. With the classics it's often pretty difficult to "find an angle", so to speak, but I've never had that trouble with Breathless. I mentioned it in here recently, but I did a piece for Sight & Sound on the film recently and the amount of feedback I got from that particular debate was almost overwhelming (it was a close reading of the film's final moments).

Ehh, Breathless may well be style over substance, but man, WHAT style it is.

The iconic theme (NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE!) is also one of the most memorable themes in film history, even if it's actually very short and fairly basic.

Breathless and Contempt are my two favorites by Godard.

I also like Band of Outsiders, Vivre Sa Vie, Une Femme Mariée, and Pierrot le Fou, but I don't feel a need to own them.

I found myself rather neutral towards Every Man for Himself and I dislike Weekend.

A good, if not somewhat overwhelming, read about all the best releases from last year. It will be more applicable if you're region free...

Contempt is great, but the ending makes me want to jump off a bridge.

With regards to Breathless, I think there's a lot more to sink one's teeth into with Pierrot Le Fou, Vivre Sa Vie and Masculine Feminine.

I could watch Pierrot Le Fou a hundred times and pick up something new on each viewing.

Stylistically, it's one of the most creative films I've ever seen.

I'm not saying it's not a good movie--certainly a very important one.

Just at the end of the day it doesn't really make me feel anything.

Except perhaps loathing for the American girl.

I despise her.

I don't think the actress is that great either.

...certainly no Anna Karina.

Breathless following the 400 Blows. A knock out!
