Honestly, I think the DVD has a better mix than the Blu-ray.

There's confirmation from Morgan Creek on Twitter that all but states outright that it's happening. Short of an official announcement I don't know what more you would need -- this isn't just some poster throwing BS around. Blatty might have jumped the gun and backpedaled, but then Kermode brought it back a bit -- whatever the case may be, more than something seems to be happening.

Either way, the very company that owns the film has tweeted out about it, not once but twice already. So there's at least that. It would be a shock IMO that it's NOT happening based on the comments they've made.

I hope they just take out the joker faces, call it a directors cut and be done with it.

I'll have to give this film a chance and watch it. After the disappointing sequel i had no interest in seeing the third.

Exactly. Morgan Creek brushed off Blatty for years and basically told him that the original footage was 'lost'. The fact that they are coming out now and talking about it is a very positive sign indeed.

It's weird. I wonder how man alternate cut (small or major) there where of this film. I remember when I saw it in the theater Tubular Bell was played during the burial and into the end credits. When I got it on Laserdisc the music is what we hear now.

I don't think I want to know tbh. Every time I hear about an alternate version that will never see the light of day I cringe. I'm always advocating for studios to release the most complete version of films and to let us decide which ones we like but oftentimes that footage is either lost or not in usable condition. Tell you one thing, any time a popular film is released in a Director's Cut with previously unseen footage it makes the release much more exciting.

- Aftermath of death scene of the first murdered priest -- where his dead body is shown holding his severed head while sitting.
- Longer version of the scene where Kinderman talks with priest about the murders and when demon face is shown on statue of the saint. Originally, unseen intruder decapitates the statue and places a knife in its hand.
- Exhumation of Damien Karras's body in Jesuit cemetery. Later it's discovered that dead body is actually from Brother Fain, Jesuit who was tending Karras's body and who disappeared 15 years ago. Although this scene is deleted, parts of it are used in new ending where Patient X/Karras is buried.
- Blatty's original cut also didn't have Jason Miller as Karras/Patient X in it, and it had a different isolation cell for scenes in which Kinderman talked with Patient X/Gemini killer. Some promotional photos show Patient X and Kinderman talking in original cell.
- New exorcism ending that Blatty had to film also had small part deleted in which Karras/Patient X is morphing through many other faces. One theatrical trailer shows this deleted scene.

To be honest, I am interested to see how absence of Jason Miller will play out - it will be strange to see Kinderman talking about how he sees "a man who looks like Damien Karras" in front of himself while he will be played entirely by Brad Dourif...
A lot of this footage was re-inserted in a FanEdit cut that I saw. SO GOOOD!!

Save your breath. Moronville missed the whole point of the film

Personally I hated the novel and found it a disappointment. The film is better, and connecting it to THE EXORCIST is like a better second re-write. Other wise we're left with story sorta about/connected to the original.
It's no better than Ridley Scott waking up one day during the production of Prometheus and telling everyone, "it's not the same planet as in ALIEN" .... even though it went into production that way.

The film, as released, doesn't add that much as a 'direct connection' to the first other than having a pointless exorcism: everything else is from the novel, really.

I found the most interesting bits of the novel were Kinderman's (hence Blatty's) ruminations on the nature and source of evil, much in the same way as The Ninth Configuration. The film suffers from not having Kinderman reach the kind of spiritual conclusion that he does in the novel. It has no real satisfaction to its ending, whereas the novel's coda is quite resonant.

Hmmm - never saw the original Exorcist 3 so this will be new for me. Obviously the first one is a all-time clasic and one of my favs so having another film to add to the franchise is great news. I hope.

As for the film, would you all say its "sort" of tied into the first film so as they could be watched as a pair? The second one is to be avoided at all costs so forget that one.

I guess Im excited about this.... COOL!

I've long been fascinated by how much Blatty latched on to this supposed friendship between Damien and Kinderman. So much that I think he's even said that one of the reasons he wanted to keep the longer ending to the original film was that it suggested that the friendship with Damien would live on through Dyer.

I seem to remember that in the original novel, Kinderman was a bigger character, and he may have talked with Damien a bit more, but in the movie, they literally have one conversation, and then Damien dies. There was a connection there for sure, but I always laugh when I see that photo at the beginning of Exorcist III. When was that taken, exactly??

Was all that part of the studio-imposed Exorcist connections?

It's true that the Kinderman/Karras friendship continuity between the first and third films is dubious at best. I've never particularly minded, because I'm very fond of each film, but the inclusion of the photograph scene at the beginning of III is almost certainly part of the studio-mandated changes, since Miller wasn't involved in the film at all until the studio stepped in.

But it is a bit funny. I mean, it's like they sent George C. Scott back to 1973 with three missions: (i) kill Lee J. Cobb and take his place; (ii) meet and befriend Damien Karris; (iii) get your picture taken with him.

The novel took place over many months, much like the case its' based on, while the film took place from October to November, with Kinderman and Karras meeting about halfway into the film; so The Exorcist III definitely takes more from the novel of The Exorcist in that respect.

I saw the film in theaters the day it opened. The only time Tubular Bells showed up was for a few seconds at the start of the opening credits.
