Throw distance is 13 1/2 feet at 106" dia. screen. Sit about 9 1/2 feet away.

Default New to the projector scene

I'm sitting 11.5' from my 106" 16:9 manual screen. The top of the screen is 5" from 7' ceiling. I plan on building a 110" 2.35:1 screen to have hidden behind my manual screen. I'll update my photos when I'm done painting the ceiling black. Should i go matte black or semi-gloss? Ideas?

I have egg shell if I would do it all over again I would go with all flat / matte black. Semi is still good but with my light cannon I get just a little bit of reflection.

Thanx for the advice. I was thinking flat black would be best but needed some input. My glossy white suspended ceiling is bright.

Actually come to think of that. I actually have egg shell very dark green on 3 walls, flat black one the where closet is (I'm my gallery there are old pictures when I had tv). And then ceiling is flat black. No reflection on the ceiling at all. Just watched Enders game and was paying attention to the ceiling, and nothing. As dark as it can get. And in that movie they go from dark to bright scenes a lot.

Watched Gravity last night and my ceiling is very distracting. I think I spent more time looking at then the movie!!! All is good though.

1. I'd like to know your Projector Screen Size vs. Viewing Distance...... Pretty Simple

2 .Also do you wish you had a bigger/smaller screen from the distance you are sitting at right now ?

Best,

Rana
1. 95" from a 92" screen. (throw distance is 135")

2. I'm fairly close so it's cool. But at the same, bigger is rarely not better.

8' from a 140" (diag) scope screen; throw distance: 20' ... and yup, I love sitting in the first third of the auditorium at the theaters (tho not the first few rows) so that the screen (preferably 2.40) fills most of my peripheral vision

I moved this past summer and am still using my portable projection setup. Saving up for some upgrades. Just dealing with what I have for now. So at present I'm at 120" (16:9) from 15 feet per the below which is what I've been accustomed to for the past several years.

Image Area: 120" (1.78:1), Viewing Distance: 15 feet

Really itching to go CIH though as I find 2.35-2.40 films to be underwhelming at only 113" in contrast to 1.78-1.85 content at 120". Ideally I'd like to maintain the same image height that I have now for all aspect ratios. Zoom method is not possible per my short throw projector sad to say, the BenQ W1080ST.

BenQ W1080ST...my mighty little short throw projector.

So just for kicks I took my portable projector screen off the wall, laid my mains on the floor and re-positioned my projector taking the image up to 163" (16:9). Even with the heavy orange peel and general poor condition of my wall the image quality holds up very well per my 14 foot viewing distance.

Image Area: 163" (1.78:1)

While going wall to wall, floor to ceiling is very cool I'm still thinking I'd prefer to go CIH instead placing the emphasis on scope material. Fired up a 2.40:1 film moving the image to the top portion of the wall providing for just enough room to get my mains up off the floor some. The difference is quite dramatic going from 113" to 154" for scope content. The immersion factor is definitely taken to the next level, much more on par with the feeling I get when going to the cinema. After watching a few scope films using the full width of my wall there's just no going back. :-P

Image Area: 154" (2.40:1)

Maintaining this same height for all aspect ratios would still provide for the 120" 16:9 image that I'm accustomed to, just a much wider image for scope content, so I'm really leaning towards going CIH. Zoom method at first perhaps, then adding an A-lens. If only I weren't so cash poor right now. :-(

Throw distance is about 12-13' feet back and so is my seating distance to my 106" screen. Would love to go bigger but is a simple bedroom setup and short ceiling height hurts too. Thank god my Sony 40ES is super quiet as it is right above my head by a foot or 2.

We are building a home theater (media room). We have a closet door at one end of the room and have added another identical door at the other side of the room with a custon a/v piece of furniture spanning the 10 feet between closet doors. I want to use a 120 inch screen but if I do I will not have room for the Martin Logan flush mount wall speakers that I wanted to use which are 6.5 inches wide. Can I use other speakers in my a/v furniture instead of mounting them next to the screen in the wall or should I use a 110 inch screen wich would give me the space needed for the speakers in the wall. The distance from where I will be sitting to the screen is 15 feet. Will the 110 inch screen do the trick for that space? Can I even use the 120 inch or would the projector need to be farther back than 15 feet. I hope all of this makes sence?
Thanks so much in advance for any advise. I have attached a design image of the area.

I would opt for the smaller screen so you can utilize the setup you have in mind. The difference between 110 and 120 is not huge. I thought about going to a 120" screen a few weeks back but the cost and hassle to modify isn't worth it for me.
