No, you can use any subwoofer you like.

Sonance is known for their in-wall speakers - (used to sell them, along with Speakercraft and Paradigm inwalls) That's probrably why you haven't heard of them.

You don't NEED a THX subwoofer to get sound. To get the correct THX sound(certified), then YES you need one that has the THX label. Each piece of equipment has been put thru various rigorous tests and pass. Read up more about it here.

I only have a THX certified receiver, but I watch movies in THX if they have the THX logo even though I don't have THX certified speakers.

Unless the room has no parralell walls all of the THX stuff you bought means nothing. THX certs are kind of a joke.

Ive also heard that in order to be "THX Certified System" you need to have all the cables and everything THX Certified as well. Like said before, its kinda a joke and not necessary in my opinion..

Most good speakers exceed THX specs. It's just that most quality company's will not be held hostage (pay fees to THX) to have the THX testing & name on their products.

Yeah, if one thing is not THX cert, then nothing is. Including the shape of the room, which most people don't know.

i would assume it's very very hard to setup a home theater that met all the requirements

speakers/receiver/acoustics/room size/listening area/movie selection

=big bucks

Actually it is not that hard to setup a THX certified room and overall system. Its just really expensive. Personally, I highly recommend THX's acoustical recommendations, but their certified equipment does not guarantee good sound.

That's not true. On recievers, their listening modes offer multiple bennifits. As for certified speakers, all it means is that they were tested and passed THX's standards. Like someone else said, that doesn't mean you're going to like the sound they create. But they do still pass THX's standards. And yes, you can obviously get speakers that sound better than THX certified ones.

I think their recievers are more bennificial than their speakers. However, there are some certified recievers that have really been terrible. But you can normally tell which ones aren't going to live up to high standards by the price points.

I have to agree with you to an extent. There was a Kenwood receiver that came out years ago. Had a nice shiny THX badge right on the front in big bold letters. It was rated for 120wpc into six channels. When tested, it didn't even meet the spec's THX set for receivers. I lost faith in that badge right at that point. Then I have actually listened to quite a few THX receivers(and even owned a few), and they sometimes didn't sound as good as a non THX receiver.

On the onkyo 805 which is thx certified the thx sound modes dsp sound better to me than the normal dolby and dts sound modes but it could just be subjective.
