Cool Night on the Galactic Railroad coming to Blu-ray in November 2015 from Discotek

I thought I'd create a thread for the upcoming Night on the Galactic Railroad release since Discotek recently posted cover art for it on Facebook. It's coming out on Blu-ray in November 2015, after an initial DVD release.

For those unfamiliar with the film, Justin Sevakis over at Anime News Network wrote a Buried Treasure article about it back in 2006. Don't let the cutesy cat characters fool you. It's actually a deep, intriguing film. You can check out its Japanese theatrical trailer here:

Been excited for this release since Discotek announced it wanted to see it for a long time. I've also been reading the book due to it's major influence on Mawaru Penguindrum so something to help me better understand and connect with a favourite title is always welcome.

The JP BD was one of those interlaced delicacies wasn't it? Remember hearing bad things about it, but can't remember too much.

Just had a look at the Amazon Japan reviews and this one indicates that it's 1080i and DNR'd. Which is a darn shame, as it was possibly the most exciting anime release of the year next to Belladonna of Sadness.

For what its worth, here's a trailer for the Japanese Blu-ray. It could certainly look better. Maybe Discotek will be able to work some magic on the masters they get?

I haven't seen any caps out there, I wonder if it was an upscale?

Hopefully we all end up pleasantly surprised by the picture quality of the forthcoming Blu-ray.

With that said, I am still excited to add this film to my collection. More old school anime on Blu-ray is always welcome in my home.

Movie is required viewing if you're going to watch Penguindrum. Hardly the only required material for that series if you really want to delve into its layered complexity.

This movie is also majorly required viewing if you're going to watch Giovanni's Island - even the main characters in GI are named after the characters in NOTGR... if you watch those two back to back, you'll definitely want to have a big box of kleenex next to you...

I'll be pre-ordering the Blu-ray of this one no matter how bad the transfer is...

Basically if anyone is a Penguindrum fan (and I'd hope you are in my presence ), and this isn't even on your radar or you've no intention of watching/reading this you might need to reconsider why you even enjoyed Penguindrum. (no I will not ever shut up about Mawaru Penguindrum. Someone needs to make up for the lack of buzz around it)

The Blu-ray release has been delayed for early 2016. The DVD edition, however, will be released on November 24th.

So what else is new - seem like it's the trend with all the high-profile Blu-ray releases now, everything is getting delayed for months recently... hopefully most of the delays are due to them being able to add more stuff or improvements to the releases. I don't mind these delays too much, though, as it spreads out my purchases a bit more, much easier on the wallet.

Looks great imo. I imagine it'd be the same as the JP 1080i release, which people said had some issues in the transfer itself but realistically considering the age of the film and that it was probably low budget it transferred just about as well as it was going to. I think it looks fantastic and I'm quite content with it.
