On the Reciever based on what input you are using the optical cable on make sure that the input is set to digital and not analog, sometimes Auto is an available option. PS3 should be setup to bitmap for the optical cable.

There's only one optical output from the reciever, and it's hooked straight up to the optical in the ps3. i got the sound working, and on the reciever it says pcm 48. which i'm not sure what that is.
