Why is Cruise in The Mummy a big no? There is a lot of rumors he's playing Van Helsing, and that's pretty good casting for the character...Someone like him anchoring this series as that character is smart.

Ha ha ha. Personally, I can't see (there I go again) any version of "The Invisible Man" working for modern audiences. It worked in the original 1897 story because everyone at one time or another had imagined what it might be like to be invisible and such science fiction was a new genre. It worked in the 1933 movie because of the uniqueness of the special effect. Then there were the comedies that worked because audiences found it funny to see objects floating in air. The films worked because in those conservative times, it was "shocking" to realize that in order to appear invisible, the character had to be walking around naked. Today, simply being invisible is not enough of a 'special power" for anyone to care. IMO, the film only works if it's also intended to be a statement on the fact that none of us can be invisible any longer because there's no longer much of a notion of privacy. I don't hold out any great hopes for any of the Universal Monsters Universe films. Aside from Coppola's "Dracula" and Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein", no one has been able to make these characters work for modern audiences. Virtually every other film made in the last 40(?) years has been a disaster. "Victor Frankenstein" seems to have disappeared in the blink of an eye. Having said that and as I've posted before, there is an 'official' sequel to the Dracula novel written by a grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, Dacre Stoker and writer Ian Holt, called "Dracula, the Un-Dead". One can tell that the novel was written in hopes of a screenplay adoption and it has some ridiculousness, but the overall story is actually pretty good and makes sense. I'd like to see it made, although it might make a better mini-series than a movie. |

Someone like Lance Henriksen as Helsing would be good casting if you ask me. Cruise? can't see it.
