Naturalistic use of 3D to me means using the entirety of the available 3D space to "put you in the movie" and by that I don't mean "stunts" like firing bullets or jabbing pointy objects in your face, I mean positioning people and objects well outside of the screen to create a greater distance between the objects most in the foreground and those most in the background. That's not hacky, that's what masters of 3D do.

Ridley Scott's 3D to me is more of a fish tank style "window on the world" which sure looks pretty but I personally find it less involving. Even James Cameron (who has gone on record slating "stunt" 3D) pulled the foliage well out of the screen in Avatar as he knew this would make for more of an immersive experience.

TBH the movie just didn't need to be in 3D in the first place and felt like a money grab. The 3D was not used in a clever way, nor was it used to tell the story at all. It just wasn't neccessary.

Frankly the whole thing just felt like a mash up of other, better films.

Apparently "One of the best 3D practitioners" has not yet taken a vital compositional step for negative-plane placement, which essentially references 3D substance-formation in the image.
This does NOT have to be "hacky" or "a "stunt" where shit comes out and smacks you around", but it is essential, if for nothing else, visual reference for quality realism evoking the emotion of artistic 3D involvement.

Have you not learnt the '3D lesson' yet?

If a major Hollywood director decides to make a film in 3D, that film immediately qualifies as the BEST 3D in the BEST 3D film ever in the eyes of most reviewers and the brainwashed masses.

In reality the only major directors that has made truly great films with great 3D are Scorsese with Hugo and Ange Lee with Life of Pi, all the rest have made very average films with 'safe' 3D and yet are all lauded for having the best 3D known to cinema.

Look at Gravity for example. Yes it was a good film, but the 3D was average at best and all we heard from everyone was that it was the best 3D film ever made which was pure 'get arse on seats' hyperbole.

The best 3D film director in the world is Ben Stassen and yet outside of this forum I doubt anyone has ever even heard of him.

Sex and Zen Extreme Ecstasy in 3D is an absolute classic. Nowhere near as naughty as Love but so much more out there plotwise. More than decent 3D too...

Just bought.

11.99 right now. By the way, this deal doesn't show up under the 3D section of deals, you can only find it in the normal deals area.

In 3D.

Both the film and the 3D were great. Hope the sequel is just as good.

Bought Rescue 3D also.

Watched: Frankenweenie. Not only a very touching story, but so many of the 'insider' jokes from other movies were great. 3D was much better than the paranorman variety and added nicely to the Frankensteinesque scenes especially.

Watched: Jupiter Ascending. Unfortunately this is the 2nd 3D movie I've ever turned off 45 minutes in. Although the 3D was very pleasing, there was just no sitting through this one.

Ice Age: Continental Drift - more of the same which is a good thing when it comes to the Ice Age movies. Lots of fun and lots of laughs. Another release where the 3D is stellar and there are several pop-outs.

Movie: ***1/2 out of *****
3D: ***** out of *****

Watched banshee chapter 3d. Great horror movie with fantastic 3d!! No real pop out (which I want in all my 3d movies), and occasional ghosting, but the 3d is stellar. Highly recommend!!

The Young And Prodigious T.S. Spivet - I had never heard of this movie until getting into 3D on this forum and reading about it. I have to say that the raves I read for both the story and the 3D are spot on! I loved this movie. Yeah, it can sometimes be a little too cutesy and almost pretentious but that didn't matter to me. The underlying sadness of the child's story struck an emotional chord with me that I will feel for days.

The casting is perfection. All the way around from the main child actor down to the smallest supporting role. And the 3D is excellent. This movies proves that you can have excellent 3D and not have to be an action or horror movie. It's just a downright beautiful film, both story and picture.

Why haven't I heard of this movie before???

Movie: ***** out of *****
3D: ***** out of *****

Why? Serious control issues and the payback for going against Harvey Weinstein who has attained the distribution rights in the U.S. and then punitively black-listing the promotional distribution of the 3D film due to "conditions" not being met; Weinstein attempting to pursue editing change "cuts" against the director's intended artwork.
