Not necessarily. Maybe the laziest of the lazy studios, but most of these UHD releases are from cinema DI's, not the ones created for home video.

Some studios are also using HDR as an opportunity to go back to higher resolution source files and create new 4k masters.

No, this not streaming. The files are downloaded to the X1 or X10's HDD. They are MP4 files with H.264 coding. They range from about 45GB to 60GB depending on the content.

Streaming vs disc


Sorry folks, but from what I've seen so far, i would put the sony download movies in the same category as M-Go. Mgo downloads and amazon streaming are virtually identical. With amazon sometimes even looking better.

Fast forward to uhd disc, alot of people including myself have been comparing uhd disc versions of the same movies on mgo, and the disc versions easily beat the mgo versions in color, black levels, and sharpness.

Not sure why anyone thought this would be different than 1080p blu vs 1080p Netflix, Vudu HDX, whatever.

Then let's not forget lossless audio which matters just as much as video quality to me.

I've found the quality of "1080p streaming" on my projector is no better than a DVD disc (think 110 inch size though).

Like others have said the audio is far better on BR compared to streaming options.

The popularity of streaming comes into play when you have a 50" and below 720/1080p LCD/LED HDTV with only a pair/ 2 stereo speakers of 10 watt max (usually lower wattage speakers) that are directed to the wall behind the TV, and not the audience/you. Equals terrible experience but this is sadly the norm these days.

Streaming is good for low end setups. Apparently that is how average people love their TV just like their food quality haha! Not me though

I hope I can afford a 4k setup soon. Looks nice.

??? The source master for the DCP and home video release has been the same for almost a decade. Of course home video releases are mastered to stay within the specs of the destination format. The same applies for UHD Blu-ray...

About the HDR, I am not so sure about those claims about going back to RAW files.

Anyway I consider HDR a gimmick as it needs a re-grading of the original movie that goes against High-Fidelity to the original work of the director and the DOP.....

I'm not sure either, at least in terms of increased resolution. Otherwise the resolution upgrade in The Martian would be more apparent (in the non-CGI shots).

I took a few. Along with 1080p blu ray shots.

The downloaded mgo versions were right in the middle.

I read something interesting yesterday.

Apparently all of the live shots were filmed in at least 4k.

So on Mars shots, the live objects such as people and rovers are 4k, while the background is 2k. It appears sharper, with better contrast and more pop.

The feedback including myself is that these shots on the uhd disc look AWESOME despite the 2k background.

Netflix and Amazon 1080p streaming looks more than adequate on my 100 inch screen, DVD's suck badly on that size.

Not saying they are on par with Blu-ray but let's not exaggerate things.

I don't think the comparison from spider-man wasn't fair, since someone posted the sizes of those downloads on other thread and Lawrence of Arabia was more than 100GB, if it was a Netflix 4K stream it would be around 25GB based on their 15Mbps requisite.

The Sony titles are not streaming, and are larger higher sizes than the discs we have now

Yea i know. Mgo isn't streaming either yet get their ass kicked by disc. Some theories floating around is that discs are using different /more efficient compression techniques.

You watch 2.35:1 movies zoomed in and cropped to 16:9.

Your opinions on everything are wholly irrelevant.
