It's amazing the amount of people at bluray.com that refuse to admit the evolving technology and use every little excuse to belittle it. Bunch of 90 year Olds clinging to yesterday's technology.

While I may not agree with Ray's decision to zoom in on his movies - it is just a weeeeeee bit puerile to say everything else is null and void. Obviously it's just joking around and Ray shouldn't have reacted (come on man, this is the internet) - but I do agree that the same attitude that existed when blu-ray first emerged re: "can't tell the difference" is still prevalent now with 4K.

Tech moves on, with or without you. If it fails, oh well. But it moves on.

I wasn't around for the format war between BD and HD-DVD, but reading some of these 4KBD threads over the past few months I think I have an idea of what it must have been like.

You have no idea what it was like over on AVSForum.

This is nothing in comparison. This is like a small melee between two platoons compared to the war that was 2006-2007 in BDvsHDDVD.

And oooohhh my god when Paramount announced HDDVD exclusivity.

This actually isn't so bad. It's the same handful of guys who post the same negative stuff about UHD.

Well that was a true war, right now BD will continue to exist anyway, the two standard are not competing against each other.

What was dramatic about that war was the fact that early adopters paid a fortune for a player or players that could become useless any day....

In the end I was lucky: i had a launch PS3

I think we can all say that the better format won, for once...

I remember it all right down to the M$ shill. M$ pushed HDDVD because I think they knew it would fail and hoped to take it all down. Once WB jumped and M$ backed out. Toshiba was standing on an island by themselves. No format will work supported by one HW manufacturer.

Well, DVD beat Divx, so we won that one too.

But yeah, everyone pouring in money to support their side... waiting to see if it would all be money down the drain.

WB announced it would no longer be dual format and go blu only... what a crazy day that was. The war was over... happy days.

Lol so true, I remember it so well, I was in both camps as I had the Samsung BD-UP5000....

...following from Wikipedia..

In November 2007 the popular audio-visual discussion site AVS Forum temporarily closed its HD-DVD and Blu-ray discussion forums because of, as the site reported, "physical threats that have involved police and possible legal action" between advocates of the rival formats.[64]

I still remember that day. Folks knew HD DVD was a dead duck when one if its earliest supporters threw in the towel. All that money thrown at Paramount to go HD DVD only only prolonged the inevitable.

WB didn't throw in the towel until 6 months before HD DVDs fire sale.

Pretty cool to pick up a 3rd gen player from Toshiba for $50 that upscaled DVDs.

I wasn't here when the war between y'all was happening. Frankly I'm surprised anyone who was dead set on HD DVD would join a Bluray.com website.. musta been easy to spot the flocks out of the herd.

I wasn't here either, I was an avid AVS'er at that time. But as soon as HD DVD died it all became rather boring which is when I migrated across to blu-ray.com (HTF having been deader than a doornail even back then).

Been here longer than most but then again, been Blu since the formal announcement in 2002. Knew there was a HD disc format on the horizon even before 2002 but details were sketchy. Just always assumed Blu would be the successor to DVD but many of us felt it would NEVER be the success DVD was/is.

I hate full zoom, but oppo has a very good compromise where it zooms but still has black bars at the top&bottom.

For what it's worth, I usually don't zoom the 1st time I watch a movie. But occasionally do afterwards.

I'm not saying anything about being a "mindless cyborg" and listening to what others tell you. Movies are shot a certain way and you purposely choose to alter it because you don't like the bars? A bigger picture doesn't matter to me if i'm watching the movie the exact way it was shot by the director. I'm not going to sacrifice image quality and things the director wanted the audience to see in those wide shots for a bigger picture. It would be the wrong picture. If anything, scope films actually do look and feel bigger than full screen movies since the wider picture has an expansiveness to them. Zooming in on a scope movie would actually make the picture look smaller and squeezed in.

I made this thread years ago that i think you should take a look at
