Cronenberg's Crash is highly disturbing and controversial. Personally, I've never been the same since having the film burned into my brain.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
The film was extremely controversial, as was the book because of its vivid depictions of graphic sexual acts instigated by violence.

Although passed by the British Board of Film Classification with an 18 certificate, the film was banned by Westminster Council, meaning it could not be shown in any cinema in the West End, even though they had earlier given special permission for the film's premiere (although anyone wanting to watch the film only had to walk along to the non-Westminster half of Shaftsbury Avenue − that is in the neighboring borough of Camden − to see it in a cinema there). In the United States, the film was released in both NC-17 and R versions. The ratings controversy has now subsided and the film is readily available on DVD. In Australia, a cut version rated R18+ was given a very limited release due to controversy; it was later released uncut on VHS in early 1997, and then on DVD in 2003. The American NC-17 version was branded with the tagline "The most controversial film in years".

In Italy, the film and its director were repeatedly attacked by La Repubblica film critic Irene Bignardi, while the Corriere della Sera critic Tullio Kezich wished the actors to give the Palmarès back to the jury. The movie was denounced by the Municipality of Naples and the environmental association Legambiente, but it was eventually distributed.

From Wikipedia:
Such a great film, not in my top 10 but it's one I hold highly.

As for my top 10, off the top of my head (I'll have to investigate to see if there's any controversy around the rest). Reservoir Dogs had a bit around the ear scene, Apocalypse Now had a lot of controversy around it's production. A Clockwork Orange was banned in the UK by Kubrick and Fight Club was due to come out a few weeks after Columbine happened. I guess I really like controversy.

Not in my top 10 but in my top 15 or so is 1997's Lolita. I know it's acting and it's all about being professional, but how did Jeremy Irons come to work everyday knowing he'd have to... do what his character does on-screen. Great film, though, incredibly haunting yet beautiful in some ways.

I would say that there are two films in my top-ten that would probably raise some eyebrows. Both of them are films that I have a very personal emotional attachment to, and I see them both as masterpieces, whether or not time has caught up with me on that front or not.

The first would be Tim Burton's BATMAN RETURNS. Often maligned by comic purists for its deviations from the source material and by the modern Nolan crowd for its unapologetic comic-book weirdness (rocket penguins!), it is, due in no small part to excellent production design, costumes, Danny Elfman's greatest score and wonderful performances from Keaton, Pfeiffer, DeVito and Walken, one of the most imaginative blockbusters ever made. There is just no other film quite like this.

The other would be Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Another film that I feel is treated unfairly. It gets held to a standard that none of the other Disney films are held to because it happens to be based on a well-known and still widely-read novel. If you cast aside any notion of fidelity to the source material, you can see this film for what it is: a bold and daring masterpiece of family entertainment. The animation in this film is simply incredible, and, again, does NOT get the respect that it deserves. I am convinced that in a more honest time, this film, like Pinocchio, Fantasia and Alice in Wonderland before it, will be re-assessed and come to be seen as one of the Disney company's finest achievements.

Same difference really, it wasn't really just asked to be removed from cinemas because he didn't allow any sort of release of it from when it was removed until he died.

I'd have to go with Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. That final speech resonates as much to today's society, as it did in 1940. I think it's one of cinema's greatest films.

My two runner-up titles would be A Clockwork Orange and Salo.

Psycho for it's shocking on-screen depiction of a toilet.

Probably Silence of the Lambs, which at the time was criticized in some quarters for being "homophobic".

These thread bumps are making me sad because I'm reminded of interesting members like Talleyrand who kinda just disappeared.

I don't mind Cremildo bumping stuff. It's not like we have a wealth of new releases to discuss. It's just weird seeing members I used to converse with and thinking, 'Hey, what happened to them?'

Yeah, I don't mind it either, sadly there a few members that have ghosted.
