For anyone on the fence about seeing this masterwork, here is a brilliantly succinct, raving review by actor Bobb'e J. Thompson:

What do you think Nicolas Roeg's direction of Bryan Brown was like on "Full Body Massage"? "Bryan, why don't you knead Mimi's breasts counter-clockwise this time?"

Do you think that Brown purposely screwed up takes so he could do as many as possible? I wonder if Brown did this so Roeg would shoot a Kubrickian 40-50 takes. So many questions about the shooting of this, as you so aptly stated, masterwork.

I like to think it was along the lines of:

Brown: What's my motivation for this scene?

Roeg: Have you ever seen porn, Bryan?

Brown: Yeah...

Roeg: Did you pay any attention to the guy in it?

Brown: Why would I do that?

Roeg: Exactly. Women don't even pay attention to the guy. Nobody's looking at you, either. Do whatever the hell you want.

Other modern sci-fi movies of the last 5-10 years that would be intriguing and a decent fit in the Criterion Collection:

Melancholia

Ex Machina

Under the Skin

Another Earth

Anyone care to add more "cerebral" sci-fi movies to the list, from within the last 5-10 years?
I am intrigued by your choice here.
Good ones !

Speaking of sci-fi movies, a film I'd love to see get a Criterion release is Ken Russell's "Altered States". It has a bare bones release from Warner, but it's a film that begs for supplemental features. I think it's one of Russell's best films, along with "The Devils" and "Women in Love". Although it's as much a horror film as sci-fi.

Another sci-fi film (albeit not hard sci-fi) I could see going to Criterion is Wong Kar-wai's "2046". I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed when I first saw this after seeing masterpieces like "Chungking Express" and "In the Mood for Love", but it's a film I could see Criterion releasing given its relationship with Wong Kar-wai.

I just received my copy of Thin Red Line and I am awestruck at how good this 4K transfer is. The lack of grain makes the film look as if it as shot with digital camera. They actually used Kodak film! The elegant menu, the expert commentary and that nice, thick booklet all add up to a very nice package from Criterion. And I compare this to a lot of recent titles from major studios and I'm shocked at how badly the studios handle the transfer.

I wish Criterion would bring to BluRay some of their older DVD-only titles like 49th Parallel, Bad Sleep Well, Von Sternberg stuff, The Silence of the Lambs & RoboCop etc.

Ex Machina, yes yes!

Another Earth had an intriguing premise but I was not feeling it when I saw it in the theaters. The melodrama felt very Lifetime movie to me.

The word is Criterion was given the option of releasing The Silence of the Lambs on blu-ray but declined.

Under the Skin would definitely fit nicely into the Criterion collection. I haven't watched the others yet though.

Career Opportunities might have been John Hughes' worst script, but the film did leave a lasting impression for other reasons.
God bless your gif sir! Wowza

Another Earth I've never heard of that one I'll check it out.

Contact would be another cool CC release. Have some amazing special features and docs

The Bad Sleep Well is amazing, but I am not holding my breath because it isn't a Kurosawa Samurai movie. It's a Japanese political thriller. The only non samurai Kurosawa movie they released is Ikiru, and that was just the other month.

Altered States is in my all time top 10. I love how authentic the academic milieu feels and how the
[Show spoiler]whole thing goes completely bat shit crazy at the end.
Very pleased with the PQ and AQ of the existing release as well.

On the other hand, the pacing of the film (which I wasn't particularly fond of) actually makes the film what it is. It's difficult to make a character study on the difficulties and artificialities of fame, success, parties, and glitz and glamour without showing a character in a constant state of repetition, going nowhere.

I think the final few minutes of the film are remarkable, but in terms of the whole of the film, I don't know. There were times I wish it was shorter, more direct, and more to the point.
I told ya the La Dolce Vita comparisons were bunk. Gotta listen to me, Scottie.

I really like the film, but I warned everyone to keep the ridiculous comparisons down.
