I watched the originals tons of times, Road Warrior was my vote for favorite action movie before this year, and I think Fury Road is even better. I think your opinion is in an extreme minority, though there are a lot of old dudes here that probably agree like alternate timeline man. It deserved every Oscar it received, and should have won best director as well. The sound in particular is some of the best of all time.

It has very little in common with the original Mad Max. It has a lot in common with Mad Max 2, though.

Despite it's low production values, the first film is still the best (IMO)! You really feel for Max after what he went through... That's what the first film has, emotion. The rest are about the action, less the drama. But I like them all...well, not 'Thunderdome' the first time around. I like it now.

Just watch it and make up your own mind. It got the best reviews of 2015, that should tell you it's worth watching.

I never thought of the Oscars as an awards show for good movies, just well-made ones. They give out prizes for technical achievements: editing, sound mixing, cinematography - not because a movie is actually good or even a box-office winner. If you think of it that way you'll never be disappointed if your favorite film doesn't win. Mad Max won for technical achievements so the telecast is actually still relevant. The rest of the show is just fluff, grandstanding and backslapping. The only thing I don't understand is there are hundreds of films released every year, many of which never even receive a wide theatrical release. Why whittle the list of contenders to just a handful? Surely there are many other films that are well made and deserving of recognition. Mad Max seems like one of those randomly-chosen films to nominate for awards, which makes it's winning so many Oscars all the more glaring.

If you judge a movie by how many Oscars it won then you have the wrong mindset.

Fury Road blew all the older Mad Max films out of the water for me, only one that even holds its ground against Fury Road is Road Warrior.

Cause it reused the road combat.

Road combat? The first one had road combat as well. I think you mean a tanker fight.

It stretched the gas tanker chase scene from Road Warior up to two hours.

I hear what you're saying, but there are only about 500 movies released every year that make more money in the US than I do. That's a reasonably small sample size. The Academy miss some things every year, but they can be counted on to mostly nominate and honor, if not the very best, then mostly very good, things.

Unlike say the Grammys or something like the VMA awards where the chance of you hearing any of the best music from that year are practically nil.

Mad Max won all those design and tech awards partly because it reached a large audience but mostly because it felt fresh and new. Not so much the story, but the storytelling.

Not really, no.

But we have our opinions. I loved the originals, and once I saw Fury Road, I felt a frenetic energy that I haven't felt for a film in a very, very long time.

I've watched it at least 5 times since it came out, and I enjoy it equally every time I watch it.

I understand that some may prefer the less bombastic and older style, but I found it easy to embrace this. I think Hardy made a very good Max, and I LOVED the female characters, as a dad of girls, it was nice to see an insane action movie that had females at the lead.

But everyone has their opinion. What I don't understand is the posters in here who admonish the film and continue posting. What's the point? What are you getting out of dimishing its achievements? This is a discussion thread, I'll give you that, but it's more a thread for fans of the film. Many have expressed their disappointment and continue posting about it.

That's just a little odd to me.
