Well, I've not had that happen and can't, with my setup but at least it proves that Sony is lying to you. If it can happen on accident it can happen on purpose.

Mine has sound through HDMI and my fiberoptic cable through the receiver. It has always done that, so I can choose my TV or my receiver. I dont think its a malfunction.

Exactly, if it can happen on accident it should be able to work at all times. Unless it is some kind of short, etc. - which actually kind of worries me. I would really like to just be able to turn on my T.V. and have sound come out without having to go and readjust the sound menu option from the optical. I tend to listen to movies through my big speakers, but most games I prefer through the T.V.

You have to remember....most of the people you talk to on the phone from these companies have absolutely no experience in this stuff. They are given a booklet, or website where they can reference questions like these. If they don't know, they will give you some BS.
I've had this happen to me with issues before. I call with a basic understanding, and need some clarification on a certain issue, and they feed me some line that I know to be untrue! It's frustrating!

I would like to have sound through HDMI AND Optical also. I do not have a reciever with HDMI and I do not always want the surround sound experiance also. I want to be able to turn on my reciever and mute my TV and that is that. I was able to do that with my PS2, Xbox and Xbox360 with no problems.

As for the question, I did have the same malfunction once. I am not sure what I or Sony did, but it was shortly after an update. I did not last long. I tested it once and it worked only that one time.

Thanks for the post Toony, knew it couldn't be just me. I really feel this is probably a software issue they could solve if they tried. Mainly, the problame of having to switch settings is my kid and my wife. All this wires and keys are hard enough without having to explain to here that "if you T.V. doesn't have sound, access sound setting under BD-VD, select Optical, now select,. . . if this doesn't work just. . ." I begin to feel more like tech-support than a husband, which, I know, that' all any of us really are. But we bring it on ourselves.

Sony, this can't be something you can't fix. So fix it. Take it easy.

Sometimes there is no sound through my reciever. I don't keep my receiver on all the time. If I have turned it off I may encounter this issue the next time I want to use it.

If I try and use my receiver and there is no sound coming out I first make sure I selected the right input. (You won't get TV sound if the reciever is switched to CD.)

If there still is no sound I will switch the input on my TV.
Let's say my TV is on the PS3 and I do not hear anything on my receiver. I use the TV's remote and change it the input from the PS3 to something else, say my cable box. After I see the picture I switch the TV's input back to the PS3. Ouila I have sound coming out of the receiver and the TV.

I can easily fix the problem just with a remote so it isn't any big deal. It's just some weird initialization thing which reminds me of a router or something. It sounds as quirky as your problem. See what you are doing to occasionally get sound or try following my advice and see what happens.
