It's really quite sad how blatantly every other studio is just trying to copy Marvel (now Disney) and their Avengers strategy - first WB their DC properties, now Sony with Spider-Man... But the problem is, Spider-Man is not big enough for all of these spinoff films. Sure, we want to see the epic conclusion that they're clearly aiming for with everything coming together, but these in-between films will be mildly interesting at best.
It's a good thing Hulk was always still Marvel's and not Universal's, or I'm sure they would be scraping to figure out how to squeeze 5 films out of his rogue's gallery of villains.

nah, Disney/Marvel doesn't need to copy everyone else. They're the leaders and the other studios are trying their best to copycat.

You do have to chuckle that before they bought Marvel and Star Wars, Disney wasn't exactly known for their action type movies. Tron, The Black Hole - not exactly up to par. Now, they own the world!

But to be serious, don't be surprised if they do a bunch of spin-off movies even with the villians as Disney does that sort of thing. There are a lot of their direct-to-video releases that use the secondary characters and pretty much as soon as the Star Wars purchase was announced so were the one-off movies so I could see them trying this sort of thing.

Feels weird with your avatar not being Loki anymore, Loki.

The villain idea is pretty neat. We need studios trying different things or it'll all get samey after a while.

It's been all-samey for awhile now, villains generally don't get their own movies because people don't enjoy seeing the bad guys win. That's why I hope this happens, Venom is one of the best Marvel villains and has enough back-story and character development to actually warrant at least a trilogy of films.

The Thor movies are half Loki films as it is. Time to go full villain. When you humanize the "bad guy" you get some very interesting results. Plus Venom looks really cool!

I don't enjoy Loki though, at least not the one in the live-action films. Comes off as too much of a tool and a sissy to be a mastermind villain with the power to destroy Earth. Dude even stood down against a mere human in Tony Stark, granted that human was wearing a battle suit.

He's got the ambition to do great things. Just hasn't quite figured out the right plan yet.

at no time did he "stand down" against Tony Stark, unless of course you are referring to early in the Avengers when he wanted to be taken.

..and he doesnt have the power to destroy Earth, and he is never supposed to. He was working with the Chitauri.

Shame Brock Lesnar wouldn't be a good actor due to his voice, but he's perfect for Eddie Brock. The guy's fu**ing HUGE!

Default Title Update: Venom Carnage

Quote:
Huge changes apparently are afoot in Sony’s Spider-Man galaxy, ones that likely will affect the webslinger’s cinematic adventures for years to come. As we reported earlier, Sony now plans to drop a female-centric Spider-Man story in between Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six movie (slated for November 2016) and the third The Amazing Spider-Man film (which will drop in 2018). This female-driven character film will arrive in 2017, continuing the studio’s desired trend of having a Spider-Man-type film in theaters every year, on the year. That plan includes Venom, though now he’s apparently bringing a friend.

Buried near the bottom of Deadline’s extensive piece regarding changes happening in the Spider-Man universe comes the news that the Venom movie – which still is expected to be directed by Alex Kurtzman – will now be a Venom and Carnage movie.

Hoo boy. So that can of worms has been opened now.

Let's talk a bit about what this means. In the comic books (you know, the source material for most of these movies), Venom was an offshoot of Peter Parker’s alien symbiote costume, which Spider-Man picked up during The Secret Wars. The costume – which was a sleek black design with white accents – ended up having a mind of its own, and when Peter rejected it, the symbiote latched on to an angry and jealous Eddie Brock, creating the villainous Venom.

Carnage, by extension, built off of the incredible popularity of Venom as a comic book character, attaching the symbiote to a serial killer named Cletus Kasady. Where Brock had a slight bit of a conscience, Kasady was a heartless killing machine – and Spider-Man ultimately needed Venom’s assistance to take the villain down.

Did you hear that? Spider-Man needed Venom.

Which begs a massive question that many Spidey fans are asking in the wake of today’s major announcements. Where does Spider-Man fit into all of these plans being laid out by Sony. Is Spider-Man part of Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six movie? Will Spider-Man fight alongside this female character who’ll carry a movie in 2017? And will Spidey show up in this Venom-Carnage movie that Alex Kurtzman is attached to? There are a lot of moving pieces on Sony’s Spider-Man board… but too few of them seem to include Spider-Man, as reported.

I understand that Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed based on what the studio was hoping to see, financially. But do audiences want to see a Sinister Six movie, a potential Black Cat movie, or a Venom-Carnage movie WITHOUT Web head? Or is he the gas the keeps the engine moving? I’m very excited by the possibility of seeing some of the finest characters in the Spider-Man universe make their way to the big screen. But if Spider-Man isn’t a part of these plans, what exactly is the point?

Default 'Spider-Man' Spinoff 'Venom' Revived at Sony

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...source=twitter

Sony has tapped Dante Harper to pen a script for Venom, something that is being envisioned as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, stewards of the Spider-Man properties, are producing and overseeing the project.

Venom is one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that need a human host to survive. In return, the alien empowers its victim with incredible powers.

For the longest time, Venom was a villain but then morphed into an anti-hero and even (almost) good guy. In his current incarnation, Venom is paired with Flash Thompson, a Peter Parker bully-turned-close friend and now a government agent.

It is unclear which Venom incarnation is being used for the new project.

The character made its screen appearance in Spider-Man 3 and was played by Topher Grace. A spin-off has been in development in several incarnations, with Gary Ross and Josh Trank among the director coming and going, and writers such as Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci penning versions.

This Venom is meant to not only stand on its own but to also launch its own franchise.

Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing Venom for Sony’s Columbia label.

Harper is an up-and-coming scribe who did rewrite work on Edge of Tomorrow, the time travel sci-fi movie that starred Tom Cruise. He also co-wrote Sleepless Night, the crime thriller that stars Jamie Foxx and Dermot Mulroney.

So they don't want to use Marvel's New Spidey in a Venom movie. If they're not recasting (again) this is gonna be dumb

Sony has got something good going with Marvel by sharing Spidey and having Marvel more hands on with the property but they are going to screw it up by doing this. Disney should just pay Sony and get the property back fully.

They said it'll be unrelated to the MCU...so...the latter...

Goddamnit, Sony...You're gonna muck up a good thing if you aren't careful.

What the hell Sony. Just connect it to the new Spider-Man series and the MCU for heaven sakes!

You can't have Venom without Spider-Man.

Avi Arad sure is a stubborn bastard. He just has to have his cake and eat it too.

He really needs to go away. People still defend him because he kept Marvel from going bankrupt all those years ago, but then you look at the s*** deals he made and he's a moron.

I remember reading (I think it was in the Sony leaks) that Kevin Feige did not want Arad anywhere near Spider-Man now that they're sharing the rights. That's a good thing, especially since Arad is at it again trying to ***** out the franchise.

Venom/Carnage? As in this storyline?:
Quote:
Carnage is going to give birth to a new symbiote and is planning to kill it but Venom wants to raise the new symbiote as an ally. Instead of either, the symbiote finds a host of its own in the form of a New York City cop named Patrick Mulligan. They bond and become known as Toxin. Spider-Man and Black Cat appear.
