TV reviewer who shot that Mad Max HDR comparison picture also wrote, that in real life TV on the right was bright and whole picture looked very good. It only looks dimmed in comparsion to HDR HDTV, dont you understand? Quote:
HDR is not some dynamic mode eqvivalent, as you clearly trying to say, and you cant replicate that bright look look on BT709 material. With HDR technology only certain details will be bright, while other details can remain dimmed and dark as in real life. But in all BT709 materials peak white must be set at 100 nits max, so very time when you will boost backlight settings too much in your HDTV (because for example you will like to see really bright picture), entire picture will look fake and unnatural, because everything will be bright and vivid (not just certain areas). So far I have read quite few Mad Max UHD impressions, and most people like that presentation. One reviewer even wrote, that it's hard to watch old BD after seeing UHD version, for him that difference was so huge. And BTW. people like you can still watch old BD version if you dont like how HDR changed original theatrical look (UHD version still use 2K materials, so you will not see big resolution improvement anyway) Last edited by pawel86ck; 03-10-2016 at 07:29 PM. |

It may be familiar, but it's wholly irrelevant. This is not a matter of emotionally-biased opinion (or defense of purchase decisions); it's a simple and absolute fact about a technical standard (or the lack thereof).

When I watched "Aliens" Bluray for the first time I was amazed, but one guy wrote me that he still prefer DVD version. He explained, that BD verison is too detailed, and so all CGI sequences looks obviously fake and unnatural compared to DVD version.

It's so funny to see all this arguing back and forth. Who really cares? If you like what UHD gives you then buy it, if you don't forget it. Personally I purchased a 4K tv and I had the UHD player. I liked it but decided that I preferred a larger screen so I sold my stuff off and got a 75 inch 1080p Sony 3D tv. I can live with the Blu-ray picture for the larger screen. Now if I could afford a 75 inch 4K display I would have went that route.

So guys, dont bother with BD and UHD formats, when you can always watch DVD. On small CRT even that shark in jaws 3 DVD should look like real, and I belive it was Joe Alves intention (he was Jaws 3 movie director) to make that shark believable ![]() Last edited by pawel86ck; 03-10-2016 at 08:27 PM. |

It's funny to read about being a stickler for what's meant to be seen, while these same people have no qualms about the higher resolution making special effects look fake and revealing wires or other previously hidden objects. The only difference is that in this case the HDR actually makes scenes look more real and authentic, not less. I'm very happy with the format and from what I read across various forums, so are the vast majority of others (the main exceptions being those with non-HDR TVs).

It's not that simple. UHD has the potential to be a fantastic format that can give us more fidelity to the original movies than we've ever had before. However, right now, it's at risk of being misused in a way that actually gives us less fidelity than standard Blu-ray. I love the potential of the format, so if that potential is being wasted, "forget it" is not a reasonable solution for me. If we'd just said "forget it" when videos were only being released pan-and-scan, we wouldn't have today's fantastic situation, in which almost every release is in its correct aspect ratio. |

This is true. For most of these movies, if someone were to watch it and not know it had hdr treatment, they wouldn't even know it. They wouldn't say anything looked faked, they'd just be amazed at how realistic it looks. Sicario looked amazing in 4k hdr. Do I know exactly what's different? Nope, but it looked great and outdoor scenes looked amazing and detailed and super clean. |

Kingsman Hitman Wild San Andreas The Peanuts Movie Exodus: Gods and Kings Smurfs 2 Of those, Wild and San Andreas look the most natural, only revealing HDR in the scenes with more lighting involved (which is actually most of them, but the extra brightness only affects certain areas of the scene). The Peanuts Movie looked the most impressive, which isn't a surprise since it was graded for HDR. If any movie was overdone I would say Smurfs 2. But they probably figured it was mainly animation and a launch movie so they wanted the colors to pop more. Really curious about the Expendables 3, but won't be getting that for a few weeks. |

If you want to watch a too-resolute disc at a lower resolution, you can just set your player to output a lower resolution. If you want to watch an SDR movie in its proper color grade from an HDR disc, you're just out of luck. |
