There used to be so many independent retailers that the studios could ignore the chains, who didn't do as good a job marketing anyway. But those days are long gone. But the big physical chains also seem to be slowly phasing out the sales of physical media or at least substantially reducing the amount of floor space allocated to it, so I think over time, they'll lose the power they seem to have today and we'll return to one SKU per product. In 2015, the top 100 Blu-ray titles (in the U.S.) took 55% of industry units and 71% of industry dollars. So the reality is that you don't really need to stock a lot of titles to fulfill the needs of most consumers (the ones who don't participate in sites like this one). When I was a kid, there were some record stores that just sold the current top 50 or so singles and had just a few racks of albums and there were other retailers that had much deeper stock. I think the Best Buy and Targets of the world are going to return to the "hit" model, especially as they open their newer stores which take up a much smaller footprint. A Barnes & Noble just lost their lease in my neighborhood and it's being replaced with a new concept, Target mini-store. It will be interesting to see how much physical media they carry - I bet not much. |

Ah that makes sense about Target cutting it off. Thank you!
And speaking of Target, my cancel link disappeared so presumably it will be shipping soon. |

I'm sure once the show is done, they'll release a huge box set, with ACTUAL worthy extras. I mean I am shocked, at how few deleted scenes are ever included, in ANY season. Plus, as long as they take to release the seasons on blu-ray, you'd think there would be a ton of extras. Commentaries are nice, but I like visual extras as well. |

This was the first season I didn't watch the show when it aired -- I was in the process of moving from Chicago to Boston when it started. Even though I have HBO GO, this is one of the very few shows I continue to buy on BD, so that's how I'm going to catch up.

That's really cool that they got Ciaran Hinds for a commentary. I'm glad there's a few new names on the list this year.
Kind of surprising that Sophie Turner didn't do any, but maybe she was busy on X-Men. Although, that does mean that we'll be spared a commentary track of two teenage girls chatting about everything BUT GoT! (ala last year's "First of His Name"). ![]() |
