Every once in a while a classic movie gets a sequel many years later. Not as a cash grab, but because fans demand it. Or so the filmmakers say. But somehow many of them just feel so... off. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but somehow they seem so different and disjointed, even though they were made by the same filmmakers. Often the tone is even pretty different. Here are some examples:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - What happened with Tobe Hooper? How did he go from the terrifying and ultra shocking and disturbing original to this overaly dark comedic, yet totally unfunny parody?! The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day - Plays like a parody, yet the second half is actually good and serious. Tonally all over the place. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - Feels like a bad attempt at copying the original movie but without skill. Escape from L.A. - Pure parody, if not then it's an utterly disappointing sequel/remake. Very bad if they took it seriously. |

![]() A few that come to mind for me are: The Blues Brothers 2000, Rush Hour 3, and Highlander 2. Bad movies that had most of the same talent involved, but they don't feel like it at all. Almost your entire list is off... ![]() |

Indiana Jones The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the correct answer. I would have said the Star Wars prequels but Lucas didn't direct Empire or Jedi, he just ruined them.

The National Treasure sequel brought everyone including the director back, but the difference in quality is pretty apparent, especially when the sequel started filming without a completed script and they were constantly writing and rewriting it.

I didn't really care much for The Mummy Returns or The Legend of Zorro. In my opinion, both made the classic mistake of introducing a child hero, who was suddenly smarter than their parents with zero believable explanation. Whenever sequels do this, they change the story's focus so it becomes more juvenile...and that turns a lot of audiences away. I am glad to have both The Mummy and The Mask of Zorro in my collection, but those poorly-done sequels are best left forgotten.

I'd like to add Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 to this list as well. Both had the same creative talent involved and both felt completely thrown together...because they were. I couldn't believe the same team was involved.

Maybe it's just me but I love Escape from LA. I love the entire concept of borrowing elements from the first movie. And it makes Snake's pissed off attitude that much more funny when he gets stuck in the same situations constantly. The situation of being a lone bad ass that gets sent in solo is pretty much his whole character. I wanted a third movie where he escapes from somewhere else.
