We used to live next door to him when I was growing up. He's about 15 years older than I am and we became friends over our love of movies. We lived across from the back field of the local drive-in. When Star Wars came out, he painted a mural of the poster on the sliding door of his custom van. He painted a star destroyer on the other side when Empire was released. For some odd reason, it didn't seem to attract the ladies

I contacted him this morning to see if he has any pictures. He told me he doesn't own a digital camera or cellphone. By the way he sounded on the telephone, I don't think he was entirely pleased about the attention. He's an extremely shy person. Maybe the next time I visit, I will sneak a couple of pics

He did offer some advice however. He said you should look for a custom metalworks shop in your area. Bring in a basic steelbook case and tell them you are in the wedding video business, and say you want to create custom steelbooks for your customers. You would need to make it worth their time so you would probably have them fabricate 50 or more plain cases when you are satisfied with their prototype. Then the only thing left is to find a small, local printing place (non-franchise) that would transfer the artwork. Places that make custom t-shirts might be able to help you. Remember to spray a couple of layers of clear-coat on afterwards to protect your investment.

I hope this helps.
He should be very pleased with his work, and the time he puts into it - it's a shame that we can't see pictures, but we wouldn't want to upset him by insisting that we see them. It's nice that he gets such an enjoyment from films that he would dedicate his free time to doing something that extensive, and I think I speak for everyone here when I say I wish him the best of luck in the future with it.

That makes sense - it's a relatively straight-forward process, but just requires time and determination (and a few skills wouldn't go amiss). I might try this one day when money is not as tight, but, until then, it looks like I'll be buying whatever the studios churn out

That's a great idea. There are so many possibilities. You could print your own artwork on some HQ paper, then spray paint thin layers of that artists plastic coating stuff they sell at hobby shops to attach the paper and protect it for life. My grandfather used it when he'd work on his model train town. It was kinda like Alec Baldwin's in Beetlejuice. He made everything by hand and used this canned spray-on clear polymer to protect it.

Heck if you had a scanner, you could scan the case. Import it into photoshop and incorporate the fake printed metal into the artwork giving it the appearance of the Sin City Case like I did on the left side of this image.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images...talboxart.jpg/

I could get into that.

You beat me to it.

This would probably be the easiest solution.

I've never tried it but if you could get a sticker on there that doesn't wear down, it could look really good, and perhaps a nicer alternative to printing up inserts for an Amaray/Viva/etc case.

Wow, I didn't know it takes so much time & effort to create steelbooks. But here is a thing, once you have some steel, you want every single one in your collection to be "steelbook-ed"
Most of the steelbooks are usually mainstream blockbusters & some horror titles. Once in a while you have art house titles like Drive, Wrestler & Tinker, Taylor available in steel. But bet there is a minority who want classics like Chaplin comedies, Bogart movies, 70s B movies & Kurosawa titles in steel too. If you can convince the studios to do larger prints (due to low margin I guess?) you may get wider selections of titles.

If you can live without an expensive lenticular image on the front of your steelbook you could design your own cover in photoshop and send the jpg to a company such as [URL="http://www.crushcraze.com/home.html"]to print it up on a large magnet for around $7 or so.

I ask on the Steelbook official email and they answer me quickly:

Minimum order: 4000 units
All depend on the kind of Steelbook you want; features/vanish, number of disks/number of colors/delivery places, etc. The final price can go from 4 to 6$ by case.

So no custom one for them I guess. Hope that can help some of you guys

I would be intrigued to find a spare steelbook case from a movie no one cares about and give it to one of my artistic friends and tell them to go to town for X movie.

....now that's an idea...
