just watched godzilla in 3d, i'm very impressed with the 3d, the depth is very very good, not much in the way of pop outs, just a heads up if you have a 3dtv that has a backlight feature make sure to have your backlight slider cranked all the way up because there are some shots in this movie that are very dark.

Last night I watched Monster Hunt in 3D (from the people that brought you Shrek, says the trailer)
![]() The 3D was pretty much entirely DOA, I don't recall any pop-out. On the plus side, that meant that I could enjoy the very natural-looking depth and very expensive-looking CGI without the subtitles wrecking any of it. I don't think I've seen a Chinese film yet that integrates CGI into live action as slickly as this one does, the monsters do look cutesy but feel as real as the actors. I'm not surprised this raked it in in China, it packs a lot into its runtime and feels like big budget entertainment should. The 3D is easily up to Hollywood standards but the film felt like it went places Hollywood wouldn't, so overall it surpassed my expectations. after a suitable break I watched The Child's Eye 3D ![]() I was expecting a crappy conversion but this looked like real 3D from the outset, full 16x9, plenty of pop-outs - an early CGI insect scene was so bad that I was really worried this would look like garbage but as it went on the effects never got as bad again and I found myself enjoying it more and more. Deep interiors, some very nice pop-outs - this ended up ticking all my 3D boxes. Though I had a good time with a number of sequences, I found the film overall to be a bit of a mess but as the special features reveal, that was the point - to mash up bits and pieces from monster, ghost and serial killer movies, and to do it in 3D because that's the future, even if it takes twice as long and is more expensive. The trailer on the disc is also 3D, which is nice. So despite the subtitle clash issue, I reckon this one is worth checking out. |

Yeah, The Child's Eye has very strong native 3D. Not sure why the Pang Brothers chose conversion for Out of Inferno. They've each done a couple other solo horror movies in native 3D (I think), but I'm not sure how those measure up.

watched 'The Monkey King 2' last night - that was fun! 3D ranged from medium to strong - I really liked it, will definitely watch again.

Sleepwalker is the one I want to get hold of next, but I'm not sure if there's an English-friendly 3D blu ray. Yesasia says the Chinese one has no English subtitles, it's safe to assume the German disc has no English subtitles and the Hong Kong disc is 2D only... |

I guess I should have read the details but I didn't expect a blu-ray to be anaglyph. Even still, after a little messing around with the color settings on my tv, it had some nice 3d here and there WITH some pop-outs which is more than I can say for some newer cutting edge movies.

Last night I watched Sin City: A Dame to Kill For 3D. This is a very dark, extremely violent, sex/nudity oriented noir style movie that may not appeal to all. But one has to admit, along with its predecessor, original in style. The 3D is a feast for the eyes, with strong dimension, lots of forward projection and a few pop-outs along the way - 5 stars. A must have for 3D if you accept the genre.

I just watched The Second Coming in 3D, thanks to there being English subtitles on the German release
![]() I like 3D horror films - lots of empty space for something to appear in and lots of opportunities for entertaining pop-outs. Unfortunately, there are no entertaining pop-outs in this movie. But there is almost constant medium pop-out, with furniture, people, branches etc all appearing out of the screen. Nothing in-your-face but enough to make sure that you know you're watching in 3D. It was shot in native 3D, so depth is natural and pleasing - my main gripe once again relates to flat subtitles which clash with the pop-out, a lot of which is centrally positioned. At least you can turn them off, though that's not much help if you don't speak German or Cantonese. It's not my favourite Herman Yau movie (that would be Ebola Syndrome) and not all of it works - there's some dodgy CGI smoke and a Poltergeist-y scene that comes off a bit cheap, it didn't really feel like a big budget movie even though it includes a car crash. The setup made me think it would be more stupid than it ended up being. Your dog digs up a jar of glowing green smoke. So you open it right in front of your face? But just when the film got me to lower my guard and dismiss it as just your usual possessed by a ghost silliness BANG comes a flash of gore and then to seal the deal OUCH comes a very strong bit of violence and it's all wrapped up in a very adult-themed tale, with a spooky twist of course. I started off fairly meh about it but by the end I'm really glad I took a chance on this one (I'm always nervous when I buy things without having seen the back cover, Amazon listings aren't always right about audio and subtitles). I would have liked the 3D used for more than atmosphere, but I'll take real 3D atmosphere over flat 2D any day. |
