The Road Trilogy looks to be a miraculous release, as does The New World. Having not picked up the original releases before the Whit Stillman set has been a real highlight of the year thus far for me thus far. This all being said, it's a couple of the individual titles that excite me the most, such as La Chienne, and Muriel, the latter of which is an all-time top ten movie of mine.

Janus Films has updated their site to include their entire catalog. Each film lists the available formats for exhibition.

224 films are available for screening on blu-ray. ALL of these films except Black Girl are available on blu-ray from Criterion.

Expect this film and more Ousmane Sembene very soon.

I think it's getting its own spine. Janus doesn't hold any of the titles in WCP 1.

But visually...the Criterion looks better. To me.
You must be looking too hard. Aside from a slight shift in color, the two releases are basically identical.

Hey guys...I am making an order from Amazon FR and would like to know if "Le Jour se Leve"
(Daybreak) 1939 has been rumored for a Criterion release. Only asking because I had it in my wishlist, but I removed it. Thanks!

This has been for a while, other films that say available to screen on blu-ray without an actual Criterion blu-ray release include:

Dragon Inn
The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick
Late Autumn
Night on Earth
Chimes at Midnight
The Lower Depths (1936)

I've not seen it rumoured. It's worth noting that there's an English disc out there too, if you want a 100% English friendly release.

That is what it was...since I do not order from France often. Both have the same transfer and English subs...probably the French version will be a couple of $ cheaper. I will add it to my order. Thanks .

Good catch. I had skimmed the list and missed those. Night on Earth would be a terrific release.

The Pianist Official Trailer #1 - (2002) HD - YouTube
Adrien Brody received a well-deserved Best Actor Academy Award in 2002 for his portrayal of Władysław Szpilman.

The Pianist won three of the six Academy Awards for which it was nominated (Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor), as well as the prestigious Palme D'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. In my humble opinion, it is the best picture of 2002, and one of the ten finest films of the decade.
I have to agree with you that The Pianist would be a great addition to the Criterion Collection if they acquire distribution rights. It's my favorite film of the Holocaust cinema genre by far. It's incredibly re-watchable, and I've watched it half a dozen times or more. I might have watched Schindler's List twice in my life, but for me, Polanski's film is tremendously more effective. I pray that this film sees a U.S. blu-ray release someday soon.

Thanks for the info! I went to a 35mm screening of The Changeling at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood in October and they had a Q&A with Peter Medak afterwards. I kept raising my hand to ask about a blu-ray release but was never called on to ask.

Hopefully this rights issue is resolved soon though because this is getting ridiculous.

I broke down and purchased a DVD of The Changeling (for two dollars on a used site) this past October, because I really wanted to see it again, and because I was sick of waiting.

Just finished the exceptional BARCELONA. What a movie! I've loved all of the films in the Whit Stillman box-set but this is my favourite by some margin. The Blu-ray looks wonderful too, and the supplements are the strongest of those across the three discs (I particularly enjoyed the Farran Smith Nehme video essay).

I also didn't realise that this is a Warner title until I watched the movie.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been any further discussion about Ran now that Pro-B's review is up. I've never seen it but the trailer makes it seem pretty awesome. Kinda disappointing that they botched up the colors.

...and I know that we already knew they were coming but I don't think I knew that they'd be available in a box set at some point - the Tarkovsky films, that is. Artificial Eye box sets aren't too expensive usually. Seems like a 'must have.'

I think the color stuff is way overblown. I saw the restoration in a theatre and it looked amazing. The blu-ray is on route as we speak. I feel sorry for the people who let whatever perceived color issues there are get in the way of enjoying this film.

I don't know... that type of thing didn't bother me with a film like Leave Her to Heaven, especially knowing that, in that film's situation, it is what it is and we have to deal with it now.

but, sunny days that now look overcast or cloudy days that like bright or whatever... that doesn't sound too good. if I was one looking forward to it, I'd be a bit disappointed.

transfer anomalies don't hinder my appreciation of any given film, but it sure is nice to see a great film looking its best.

There was a post from some guy over in that thread who just recently saw a print of Ran in the theater (AFTER he had already freaked out when he saw the first screenshots of the new Studiocanal transfer), and he said that much to his surprise the theatrical print looked very close to the colors of the Studiocanal. He said the whites were whiter, but that otherwise everything looked much more like the rather yellowy studiocanal colors than the old criterion dvd.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=203

(That post has quoted images in it, hence me not quoting it)

Here's his followup post:
Quote:
Well, the whites were whiter, but the rest of the colours looked pretty much the same as the new BD, and the whole thing was brighter. That's the best description I can give.

Now, it may be that the colours had been affected by the aging of the print, though they generally appeared fine.

I didn't see any of those things. I own, and have watched, both the Criterion DVD and studio canal blu of Ran, and this was by far the best I've ever seen it. I swear some people go into restorations trying to find things not to like.

It's not that one go trying to find things not to like, but it is hard to not be a bit disappointed that after all the work done, something relatively easier to fix now with digital color grading isn't properly done, or is done based on who knows what (edit: in this case, Director of Photography I see ), I mean they go all the trouble restoring a film, specially since you know there is little chance now for a corrected version.

I don't really know anything of this particular release, it's just my general thought.
