the update you mentioned is avaialble by simply having the unit wired connected to internet?

Sort of. It's a slow, controlled rollout determined by serial number. The manner of upgrading is a little goofy-- you have to use the tablet to set up a new device-- but that process will force the TV to look for updates. If your SN is included in the queue, you can download; if not, you have to check back later.

Here's a list of fixes:

Quote:
Bug fixes and performance improvements:

- Local dimming algorithm improvements (better contrast and black levels)
- Stuttering and frame drops fixed
- Volume control improved over CEC/ARC
- Discreet IR codes fixed
- Calibration at 30% Blue fixed
- Spotify audio output to soundbars improved
- Cast more reliably supports 24fps content
- Bluetooth pairing improved
- Significant improvements for ATMOS over ARC
- Cleaned up some streaming issues with Vudu, Vadio, Netflix
- Youtube queue issue fixed
- Game mode improved (backlight timing)
- Numerous other small fixes and improvements
And an update on HDR10 firmware development:

Quote:
We are working diligently on testing the HDR10 builds now. And we are looking at splitting it into 2 releases - the first that would support HDR10 on HDMI for those that want to use Bluray... then the fully planned release which includes streaming support.

Oh wow it also has Atmos over ARC? Sorry for being off topic but until OLED TVs don't drop in price the Vizio P seems like the best option

Atmos over ARC is confirmed. My Pioneer receiver supports Atmos, but I don't yet have the add-on modules that I need to hear it.

Sorry to derail the thread, folks, but there was talk of the Vizio TVs and HDR support, and I just wanted to offer some insight...

No problem and thanks for doing this. I'm still waiting for my Vizio contact to get back to me.

Glad you helped out here.

You need Atmos over ARC for the UHD Vudu application.

Up to now I thought the most we could get over ARC was DD+ at best
Knowing that even Atmos can now be avaialble over ARC really makes this a convenient upgrade

Yes if you want Atmos, because it's casting from the tablet to the television, with audio sent to the AV receiver via ARC. Otherwise, you could always use optical cable instead, limiting yourself to regular DD.

It's the lossy version of Atmos, BTW, based on a DD+ core; UHD Blu-rays would be based off a TrueHD core and are therefore preferred.

Still better than the usual DD we used to get over ARC, I'll take the lossy Atmos for streaming purposes. I showed the Vizio P to my wife and she went "Oh cool it comes with a cell phone too?"

From what I've read, these 2016 Vizios are currently only available direct from Vizio and from Best Buy. I bought mine at a BB in early April. IIRC, wider distribution won't happen for another few months, but I could be misinformed...

Yes, I understand this, but I only have one HDMI cable from the receiver fed through the walls into the screen.

I just wanted to know that the Panasonic player will do both audio and video through one output only as I have multiple devices into the receiver and just one output to the screen.

Thanks for your reply.

@bferr1, we are authorized Vizio dealers, but do not sell their TVs. I have several excellent contacts at Vizio and I included the "R" series to compete in our 2016 TV Shootout, simply because I believe it belongs in our TV evaluation event.

@slamma, yes Pansonic's new DMP-UB900 4K BD player will output HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2 and audio over one HDMI input so you are ok. If your receiver is HDMI 2.0a/HDCP2.2 compatible you will pass 4K HDR beautifully. The second HDMI output is for audio only.

Yes, I've got the Pioneer LX88 receiver, so 4K passthrough is possible. We have to wait until September here in Australia to buy the Panasonic player, and it looks like the better machine to buy.

Cheers!

Correct. For some reason when it comes to Vizio P, it can only be avaialble through Vizio or through Best Buy...No other seller carries it.

Jesus tapdancing Christ... does anyone know how to actually get one of these in the US? I ordered one from Amazon UK in April but it's still showing 2 months away (after missing the original ship date of early May). Being that UHD discs are region free, I was going to use this as a region B player for BD and keep my Oppo for Region A. There doesn't seem to be anyone who actually ships internationally and actually has them in stock. I've never seen a player so difficult to actually buy (and don't even get me started about the US version not showing up for several more months. 3 months into a new format and we've still only got one player available. RIP 4K... you're going to die before you ever had a chance if everything works like this.

Probably popular so in tight supply.

Better than 2006 when we just had the Samsung BD player for months on end.

At the AVF someone said that their Panasonic dealer said that there were 2500 back orders for the London area alone, so I'm not surprised that it's as rare as rocking horse poo outside of the UK. Panasonic appear to have severely underestimated the demand for it (which is surely a good indicator for 4K's prospects) but I just hope that people aren't expecting Oppo-like build quality & media functionality out of it because they may be disappointed otherwise (it doesn't even play HEVC files over USB).

But it's a cracking disc spinner nonetheless and I love mine.
