I own both, however I haven't gotten around to viewing An Experiment In Terror, but House Of Bamboo is most definitely worth picking up. The film offers a very unique and beautiful setting shot on location in Japan with some very outstanding cinematography that is very pleasing to the eye. The actual story itself is also well done with top notch acting and directing by Samuel Fuller! Hope this helps!

I prefer Experiment in Terror over House of Bamboo. B&W Noir just has more impact then a Noir in color, IMO. With that said, Violent Saturday is a really good color Noir. If you don't have that already, I highly recommend it.

Both films are so different, it's hard to compare and I would recommend both BAMBOO and TERROR, but if forced to choose, TERROR gets my money. It's a striking thriller in every regard, with images and sounds that will swirl around your imagination on nights when you're alone in the dark. Ever since I was a kid I've been fascinated by movies that make me look over my shoulder when walking home alone at night and EXPERIMENT IN TERROR has always had that power over me. As I got older the fear turned into a quiet thrill, the art of film creeping up the back of your neck.

I am not sure what it goes for now, as I got it as a preorder, but the Otto Preminger Noir set from BFI is a nice alternative if you are region free. It includes Where the Sidewalk Ends (released in the US by Twilight Time) as well as Fallen Angel and Whirlpool. The BFI set has commentaries on all 3 films by Adrian Martin. But depending on the quality, I may have to double dip on Where the Sidewalk Ends for the Eddie Muller commentary. Last edited by drb124; 06-10-2016 at 02:03 AM. |

Both of them are worth getting, but if I could only get one, gun to my head, it'd be Experiment in Terror.

![]() So been meaning to pickup a book on film noir. If I were only to pick up one, which is the best? Looking for something informative, good stories, maybe inside hollywood knowledge and trivia. I don't need a picture book that's just a glorified list, I can find that online... |

EXPERIMENT IN TERROR is an excellent thriller with beautiful B&W cinematography and fine performances. However, I think I like it only marginally better than HOUSE OF BAMBOO, which I just rewatched twice tonight, once with each audio commentary. HOUSE OF BAMBOO doesn't have quite as much in the way of edge-of-your-seat suspense, but is in many ways far more interesting for its very off-beat subtext and characterizations, its 1954 location photography in postwar Tokyo (in color and CinemaScope with stereo sound), and its very meticulous use of framing and camera movement emulating the style of Japanese filmmakers as well as to enhance plot points and subtly convey information that might otherwise be censored in the 50s. VIOLENT SATURDAY is another excellent color CinemaScope noir that has a bit more focus on the domestic melodrama going on in the town it takes place.

by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward. It's the book I seem to always go back to to check some facts. Lists tons of movies, plots and then some facts behind the movie. Some essays on film noir as well. Gives a good overview of the genre. I'd also pick up the Film Noir Reader. There are 4 books in the set. Film noir is so multi faceted that one book just doesn't cut it. ![]() Last edited by tallguy58; 06-12-2016 at 12:18 AM. |

It might sound like a harebrained idea but wouldn't it be wise to mention some of these incredibly enlightening books in the original post, thereby solidifying this thread as a one stop solution for every "Noirgasmic Need".
I'm sure all noir enthusiasts (junkies & newbies) would appreciate it. ![]() |
