Great "Irish mob" movie. Sean Penn and Ed Harris are both superb, but Gary Oldman steals the film with one of the best performances in his career, and I really don't think I'm hyperbolizing when I say that.

June is a really packed month for me, release-wise but I will eventually be clearing out my SAE wishlist before the sale ends.

Took advantage of the sale to get some older titles like:

Conrack
The Other
Major Dundee
Dogs of War
Fate is the hunter
Experiment in terror

Looks like I'm back to the blu cases.

went with....

SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN
THE DETECTIVE
MYSTERIOUS ISLAND
THE BOUNTY

I'm pretty much caught up with most of my "must have" titles......

As with Criterion, by waiting for these semi-annual sales, I'm basically paying $20 for all the titles I want...

It's the A-grade horror-sci-fi titles that you usually have to pay the piper for...

Placed an order for a few that have been on my wish list forever. And I'm pretty sure I'll be back for more before the sale is over.

The Blue Lagoon (I've been on the fence about this one since it came out. Thought I better grab it before it sells out and I have regrets)
Equus (The recent talk about this one [Jenny] nudged me to [Agutter] buy it)
Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (I like Jimmy Stewart ... and Maureen O'Hara too ... so why not)
Solomon and Sheba (mostly because I saw Gina Lollobrigida being interviewed at the TCM Film Festival a few weeks ago, and she mentioned this film)
The Wayward Bus (I've been curious about this one for years)

Not just great Irish mob movie...IMO it is THE Irish mob movie (and I say that as a self-respecting mick )

And dude's right about Oldman, except I'd go one further and say that Oldman has never been more electric on screen. It's an absolutely towering and totally lived-in piece of screen acting that should have netted him an Oscar.

I can't say much about the presentation though. Like a lot of MGM transfers, it just looks like an HD upscale. Not very impressive, but if you don't own the film in any capacity then this is probably your best bet.

I think it's a criminal act that Oldman wasn't even nominated for that performance. That year, Al Pacino was nominated for his hamming it up as Big Boy Caprice in "Dick Tracy"! Don't get me wrong, I love Pacino as much as the next guy, and he was funny in that movie, but that wasn't even a top-10 performance of his, and there's no one on this earth that is going to convince me that Pacino's performance in that film is superior to Oldman's work in "State of Grace".
