United Kingdom The Hills Have Eyes [Arrow] LE Sep 26th 2016

Quote:
THE LUCKY ONES DIED FIRST…

Horror master Wes Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street – but for many genre fans, the director’s seminal 1977 effort The Hills Have Eyes remains his masterpiece.

Taking a detour whilst on route to Los Angeles, the Carter family run into trouble when their campervan breaks down in the middle of the desert. Stranded, the family find themselves at the mercy of a group of monstrous cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills. With their lives under threat, the Carters are forced to fight back by any means necessary.

As gruelling a viewing experience today as it was upon initial release, The Hills Have Eyes stands alongside the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead as one of the defining moments in American horror cinema.

Pretty happy to see this one added to the slate, instant pre-order with amazon for me, pretty confident the price will drop as low as from Arrow direct or lower.

The Arrow price is pretty damn good. If it was any lower, I could see it selling out quite fast (especially if it was in the HMV or Amazon 2 for £25 soon after release).

One of the few Craven films I've been meaning to see, so might just give it a blind-buy. That said, both Matinee and Raising Cain do take priority.

I have ordered the other two already, and this but only for now as its not a film I like but I feel like it's worth owning and giving another chance

I will get it as I don't own the movie on blu-ray, but I wonder is this going to be a sturdy set or one of those Texas Chainsaw 2 flimsy carton deals?

A must-have. I've had the Anchor Bay DVD since forever, and this looks to be a fantastic upgrade, and an edition worthy to be released after his untimely death.

I think I first saw it with my dad in the early 80s, when I was around 9 or 10 years old, and it scared the shit out of me.

I watched it again in my late teens, and it was just as great the second time around.

What did the Deep Red LE have? It looks like it will be exactly the same as that (but just not as many discs).

In anticipation of the blu-ray from Arrow, I caught The Hills Have Eyes (1977) on rental. I had previously avoided this film because Backwoods Brutality isn't one of my favourite movie genres (Although I admire the intensity and craft of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I never bought the film because I can't imaging watching it again. On the other hand, TCM2 with its broad humour gets a thumbs up from me). THHE was made by Wes Craven in the pre-Nightmare era and has an appropriately low-budget grainy look. A large Yankee family on their way to California defies a local store-owner's warnings (a staple of horror films, they never listen to the natives) to take a detour towards a supposed silver mine, only to get lost in the desert and subsequently be set upon by a redneck cannibal family. Whether they survive their hunters forms the rest of the narrative.

The screenplay and acting are all broad strokes, frequently questionable. Many of the decisions taken by the family members in the face of their predicament are head scratchingly stupid; the characters I felt most for were their 2 lovely dogs. The film is energetic and entertaining in parts but not particularly brilliant, and I can't imagine rushing to pre-order the blu-ray, even if it promises to be a terrific package.

When I was a kid I used to have the UK quad cinema poster on the wall of my bedroom.

The eyes on it used to freak my mother out

The Deep Red LE came with a large hunting knife, some heavy black eye liner, a ****ing creepy-looking ginger-haired doll, and a razor-sharp necklace.

Quite a nice package from Arrow, actually.

Am I right in guessing a standard release will come after the Ltd has sold out? You can see the standard amaray in the picture and all other sold out ltd editions have had general releases, I believe.

So, what is it the 5000 are getting? The poster and booklet, with the outer box that's holds it all? Just curious, as I want this title but have zero interest in the fluff included. If it's extras on the disc which are unique to the 5000 that's different story.

My query is based on shelf space. I'm happy to chuck the fluff in the bin to just have the amaray, just as happy to wait for a £12.99 amaray only release a month later too.

Yes, there's no doubt they'll release a standard release after this limited edition. And most probably it will be exactly the same disc, so you'd only be missing out on the booklet, poster, art cards and slipcase. I'd be very surprised if they went to the lengths of removing extras from the disc they've already authored...but they might end up having to put some of the extras on a separate disc, in which case they'd obviously scrap that for any subsequent editions.

Since the current LE is £17.99, I'd guess that the standard edition will be £13.99 (from Arrow directly anyway), and possibly cheaper from elsewhere (e.g. 2 for £25 offers).

Thanks Rapta. Yeah price no issue, it's a fantastic price £18 for what you get. It's a good movie, iconic but it's not something I need cars and posters for. £12-£13 is a day one price for the film I'd be happy to pay, so if it's all the same content I'll probably wait, cause I really will bin the paper fluff. I'm not sure selling it all once it's sold the 5000 will be worth the hassle.

It looks similar to the Videodrome l.e and that included extras which were not in the following standard. The main extras about the movie are the important ones for me, I'm sure they're to be included.

Either way, great title and release from Arrow Video

The only thing that's tipping me towards pre-ordering this is the booklet, in all honesty. I'll decide nearer the time though, because Matinee and Raising Cain are priorities for me (as are plenty of other releases that month...Paths of Glory and The Flight of the Phoenix from MoC, The Panic in Needle Park from Signal one, The Crying Game and Quay Brothers Collection from BFI etc).

That said, it could well spill into October, in which case I'll just pop it on the birthday list. According to Arrow it's selling 'very well' on pre-order already - it might not sell out on pre-order, but I reckon it'll only last a month or two at most. Plenty of time to decide whether it's worth an extra fiver or so between now and then.

Fair play to Arrow for making affordable LE titles though. Some of their box sets are still a little too pricy for my liking, but I've enjoyed the LE editions I've bought so far (My Darling Clementine/Frontier Marshall, Thief, Withnail & I/How to Get Ahead in Advertising, The Long Good Friday/Mona Lisa, Koyaanisqatsi/Powaqqatsi etc). I regret not getting the Deep Red LE so I'm hesitant to skip another one...and I haven't bought a horror one yet. Not that this will have a bonus disc and soundtrack like that one did.

As a Prime member they get nearly all my business. I always pre-order with them ASAP to take advantage of the pre-order guarantee, and 9/10 end up being cheapest with them by release.
