I picked up this today along with the new KS7000. What is the HDR+ mode on the TV? Should I be using it to watch UHDBDs or am I better to stick to custom picture settings myself ?

It adds an HDR effect to std programming-don't use it for UHD movies. Try rtings settings-they are great on my ks8000.

I'll take a look at them now. I was looking at the AVforums settings. I'll compare them see which I prefer.

My eyes might just be deceiving me but out of the box looked fantastic but going by some of the settings like changing to warm 2 just makes the image look way too murky or yellow even though these are the settings recommended by pros.

What about settings on the player itself I read there were a lot of issues at the start is their a consensus now on what offers the best results?

Check out the first page of the player thread on avs for settings. Everyone says deep color off because that is for 12 bit. Switch over to warm 1 -I agree!

The remote stinks for a 500 player. The lack of HDR on the Netflix app makes no sense. Some blu-rays skip on the player if there is a slight fingerprint on the disc (most other players don't do this.) As soon as Sony/Panasonic/LG or someone else other than Philips put out a player I'll be packing this player back up in the box and selling it on craigslist or ebay and buying the competition's player.

I don't have a 4K projector or HDCP 2.2 receiver yet anyhow.
I've had no playback issues with either of the K8500's I've owned. It's played all the UHD BDs I've tried and the 3D and 2D BDs. I've also had no issues with HDMi handshakes. In my use the K8500 has been a very solid player. I have been very pleased with it.

What happens if you play a UHD disc on this player with a non-HDCP 2.2 / non-4K display?

You see the movie in 1080p.

So it does in-fact downscale?

I've read that a UHD disc looks better on a HD display than a HD disc does; I've also read my projector (JVC RS46) supports a higher color depth and might also benefit from a UHD disc...I want to look into both of these more and the best way to benefit from UHD on my non-UHD system, if possible.

You don't get 10 bit 1080p, you get 8 bit with a clipped Rec. 709 palette. It's better than nothing, but at least you can continue to hear immersive tracks.

So...would there be a color benefit on a JVC RS46? How would I figure that out.

If there is a benefit, I'm wondering if my Denon 4520 would pass it or if I could use the dual HDMI out to send the signal direct...

I doubt you'd see it. You might see a little sharper, crisper image due to coming from a higher resolution.

I believe you would need to use the ol' dual HDMI hook up because your receiver was prior to the true 4k video specs and copy protection schemes being ratified.

Yeah, that's a sore point for me. I 'upgraded' to the 4520 from a 4311 and had I known about HDCP, I wouldn't have.

I thought I read somewhere they my 1080 projector supports a wider color range than regular HD. I wonder if that's true or if the 8500 would send anything better.

If it's dumbed down to regular 1080 with regular color depth either way, it should downscale, right? Nothing I own supports HDCP 2.2.

The players won't send greater color depth or palette due to the copy protection flags, but you will get 1080p. I've tried it on an older 1080p set and it worked. A warning shows up, but you just hit OK.

Oh, dang. So will it send lossless audio and 1080p on the same HDMI cable? (With no 4K display, ease of cabling is preferred).

Also, has anyone done a a thorough review with the 8500, UHD discs and a 1080 display?

Compared to samsung's first bluray player which I also owned back in 2007, this thing like like freaking magic! I've had a lot of little issues, but overall am extremely pleased!

I know I'm still within my first 24hours of ownership but I've been playing with it a lot and I haven't had any issues so far.

It's probably one of the fastest loading players I have owned which was a nice surprise when I first popped in Life of Pi to see the disc menu appear within seconds.

I might be in the minority but I like that it doesn't have a display on the front, I'm used to using the PlayStation as my main player and that has never had a display on the front so maybe that's why I'm used to it?

It's silent too. I have to admit, I haven't heard a peep out of it.

Since your receiver is outdated, I would send HDMI 1 to the display and HDMI 2 (audio bitstream) to the receiver. Receiver pass-through may muck something up.

I've now watched (at least parts) of 3 UHD blu-rays (Deadpool, ID4, and Star Trek) downscaled to my 1080p projector. While it works, it is not ideal. The color is off slightly. Almost like there is too much gamma. I would say the regular Blu-rays look better on a 1080 display than the 4k blu-rays do. Unfortunately, at least in the case of the movies I've watched, the standard blu-rays, don't have Atmos or DTS:X.

Another frustrating thing for me is Star Trek: Into Darkness has shifting aspect ratios. That's something I can handle with regular blu-rays, but won't be able to deal with once I have a 4k display...at least not without spending several thousand more dollars. That's not a 4k -> 1080p issue though.

What's the problem with shifting aspect ratios?

I have a 2.35:1 screen and just let it project on the wall. Nbd, you hardly notice.
