Thumbs up The Real Ghostbusters - New DVDs Coming This Summer

For those who missed out on the TimeLife box set several years ago or started buying the later re-releases only to be left hanging after Volume 3, Sony has announced a brand new multi-volume release of the show starting this summer. Details in the link below.

http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Real-Gh...though-5/22240

One important bit to point out, however:

Quote:
Also, all of Time Life's excellent bonus material, including interviews with Real Ghostbusters episode writer and story editor J. Michael Straczynski (Sense8, Babylon 5), are NOT INCLUDED on Sony's DVDs. Sony's items, however, WILL contain one thing which was missing from the Time Life releases: subtitles! Time Life's sets didn't have subtitles or closed captioning, but episodes on Sony's versions will include English, English SDH, and French subtitling on these episodes.

Great news. I have seasons 1-3 and have been hoping for them to release the others. Even considered selling what I had and buying the complete set, but I didn't have the money nor space for that

The bonus features aren't the only issue. The article states that these sets each only contain 11 or 12 episodes each, so these five volumes only add up to a fraction of the series, and more volumes will be released later:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (who the animated show's DVD rights have reverted back to by now) has announced that on July 5th - just ten days before the new film hits cinemas - will release at retail The Real Ghostbusters - Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4 and Volume 5 on DVD.

Quote:
Each item will be sold for $14.95 SRP, and each one comes in plastic packaging which sports the exact same key artwork as seen on the Time Life versions of these numbered volumes...except the previous images are schrunched over to the left a little bit, while half the Ghostbusters logo intrudes behind those pictures from the right side of the cover (see artwork below). So these are the same, right? NOPE!

Here's what you really NEED to understand: THESE NEW SONY VOLUMES ARE NOT THE SAME ON-DISC CONTENT AS THE TIME LIFE VOLUMES! Time Life's volumes were each 5 DVDs for the first four volumes, and then 4 discs in the fifth and last volume. Each of those volumes sported 30, 31 or 32 episodes per package...until the last volume, which had 23 episodes to finish the show's run on disc. The new Sony volumes, however, will each be carrying 11 episodes (V3 and V4) or 12 episodes (V1, V2, V5) per title (episode titles for each release can be found on the rear box art, also seen below).

But these five new Sony volumes will come to just 58 episodes of the show's 147-episode run...so what about the other 89 episodes? Well, our retail industry sources tell us that Sony is planning for MORE of these $14.95 SRP releases, starting with "Volume 6" and going on from there, hitting stores this coming September 6th, right around the back-to-school season.. Details on those are sketchy right now, but our contacts tell us to expect at LEAST a run through Volume 10 on that date, each in a similar configuration to Sony's July 5th slate of Real Ghostbusters volumes. No word on if there are more plans beyond those.
So, there will apparently be more volumes coming later, but based on this info, it is "iffy" if the entire series will even get released in the long run.

Even if it does eventually come out in it's entirety in this form, for those who bought the separate time life volumes 1-3 and just want to get the rest of the series, they'll really have to pay attention as to which of these new volumes picks up where Volume 4 of the Time Life set picked up, and buy the new volumes from there....

And that's assuming that these new volumes release the episodes in the same order as the Time Life set. Hopefully that will be the case, but if they aren't in the same order for any reason, that could be an even bigger headache.

I already have the original box set with the Steelbooks, so I don't really need these, but this is certain frustrating for those who bought the individual releases and just want the remaining episodes.

While I understand the cost concern, the set really doesn't take up a lot of space. The set just came with 5 DVD cases (steel books to start with, later changed to plastic cases, but all the standard size of a regular Steelbook or DVD case) line up together with a booklet next to it, and the bonus features disc in a sleeve. The outer box was just designed to fit directly around these the DVDs and booklet, so it's only slightly taller and wider around all sides than 5 DVD cases lined up together. It fits just fine on a shelf with other DVDs.

This is the best pic that I have offhand of the set from my personal collection, which unfortunately doesn't show it head-on since I was mainly photographing my collection of He-Man related DVDs with I took this pic, but to the right you can see the firehouse box set. The pic is of a walk-in closet in which I put shelves around the 3 sides to hold DVDs and Blu-Rays.

True. I just didn't want to quote all the other details in the article since I was linking to it and felt that would probably address the biggest question most might have.

I was fortunate enough to get the Time Life box when it came out (although only because they offered a payment plan), so I also won't need to get these. But I'm glad it's being re-released since I know a lot of people couldn't get the box set.

It's definitely one of the crown jewels of my collection.

I understand. I just wanted to make sure that was clear since MifuneFan already expressed interest in getting these to finish off his previous sets. I didn't want him or anyone else running out and buying Volumes 4 and 5 when these come out and later discover that it's episodes that they already have!

I think I did the payment plan, too, if I recall correctly. It is a fantastic set.

Better pic of the set than the one that I posted!

So is this new set the complete series? Or just part of it. I noticed the original boxset has "The complete series" on it whereas this one says Volume 1 - 5?

I thought there were 7 seasons though?

This is the set I'm looking at:

It has 58 episodes out if the 147. More volumes are planned. See the article linked in the op for episodes included

Thanks. Just read the article. Yeah it seems like this new boxset doesn't contain the same amount of episodes per volume as it did in the firehouse boxset.

They said they may release more volumes in the months ahead. But I would prefer to just have them all in one set. I'm pissed off I didn't get the Firehouse set when it was released now. They said originally all the volumes in that set were in Steelbooks!! That's crazy. Later on they were in regular plastic DVD cases though.

The old set goes for ridiculous prices on eBay/Amazon...I really want it though.

The first 5 volumes contain 58 episodes and 6-10 have 53, that leaves 29 more Real Ghostbusters episodes and the 33 episodes from Slimer's little side show. I guess they're gonna have at least 5 more volumes, hope Sony sticks with it.

I just submitted this recent batch of 5 releases to the database. Assuming they are approved, which seems likely, then those will be available shortly.

But I'm not familiar with the show, and so as with Sony's Volumes 1-5 and the Box Set (which I also contributed), I'm not entirely sure which Year and Season(s) they're from. I did some checking at IMDb, but there seem to be at least some differences with their order and the order of the episodes on these Sony releases.

If anyone here who is much more familiar with the show than I am would like to add or change any of that Year or Season info than I'd appreciate it. I'm not someone who needs the contribution "points" and would much prefer that the entries are correct, if possible. Thanks.

Here's the breakdown of the first 5 volumes. They pretty much follow the actual seasons in chronological order, except for two episodes which are omiited (bolded in red). I'll try and do 6-10 later. I got the first volume steel book back when this series was first released on DVD, but never finished getting the rest of the series. If priced right I might buy this version.

It's a shame Sony did not carry on releasing these in the UK. I have the first season 1 would love for Sony to finish releasing the rest.

Here's Volumes 6-10. As you can see, these are missing a lot more episodes than the first 5 volumes. Some of the later groupings in Volume 10 that were omitted were 2-parters (like episode 113A. and 113B, etc..). I'm also not 100% sure if I got the seasons perfectly, as they differed between the ABC seasons and the DVD seasons I think. Please feel free to point out any mistakes.

  3. The Cabinet of Calamari
  4. A Ghost Grows in Brooklyn
  5. The Revenge of Murray the Mantis
  6. Rollerghoster
  7. I Am the City
  8. Moaning Stones
  9. The Long, Long, Long, etc. Goodbye
  10. Buster the Ghost
  11. The Devil to Pay

Volume 7 DVD

  1. Slimer, Is That You?
  2. Egon's Ghost
  3. Captain Steel Saves the Day
    Victor the Happy Ghost
  4. Egon's Dragon
  5. Dairy Farm
  6. The Hole in the Wall Gang

    Season Three
  7. Baby Spookums
  8. It's a Jungle Out There

  10. Once Upon a Slime
    The Two Faces of Slimer

Thanks very much MifuneFan!

Currently the synopsis on these Volumes 1-5 is blank. I was thinking that the list of episodes, making note of the ones omitted, would be good to place in there.

If you agree that it's a good idea, then since it's your work then it seems to make sense to me for you to submit it if you'd like. Probably not a big deal either way, but I thought it more than proper that I give you the chance if you want to do that. Or do something else if you had anything else in mind.

Meanwhile, Volumes 6-10 have been approved. And I submitted the cover art, so that's done. The Season(s) and Year(s) remain the glaring omissions/errors on those entries, though they're missing synopsis too. As for Volume 7 then we could try it as Season 2 - 3. It might work, and seems worth the experiment at least. Again, please contribute that (and anything else you might feel the entries need of course) if you like. More than anything I don't want it to seem like I'm "stealing" your effort on this.

ETA: Just saw the new post, thanks again!

I've added the artwork to the post . I think the synopsis would be a good place to put some of this stuff too. I'll try and format that a little later.
